Christophe Berra is hoping to pass screen test

Christophe Berra believes Wolves can avoid more late heartbreak in tomorrow’s derby clash with Villa – thanks to a week of video nasties.

Mick McCarthy’s men have seen points slip away in the dying moments of their last two games with Fulham grabbing a late winner at Craven Cottage and Tottenham scoring three times in the last 14 minutes.

But Berra, who is hoping for a recall in tomorrow’s Molineux clash after missing out through suspension at White Hart Lane, is confident a week of video analysis will help Wolves cut out their errors.

“Going away from home, you come under more pressure and you have to grind it out,” said the Scotland international.

“Everyone makes mistakes and it gets highlighted – that’s part and parcel of football.

“But maybe it’s better that it’s happened at the start of the season rather than the end.

“Hopefully we’ve addressed it but you have to take into account the quality of the teams you’re playing against.

“We know if we switch off, we’ll get punished and we’ve all learned from it.

“We look at these things under video analysis and people know where they went wrong as a team and as individuals.

“Maybe we need to concentrate a bit more in the last five or 10 minutes of games to hold on, especially after the last two games.

“But that’s something we’ve been working on.

“You don’t learn if you don’t make mistakes.

“It’s a good time for the squad – we’re young, ambitious and we want to keep getting better.”

Berra is targeting an immediate Premier League recall and eyeing the chance to resume his partnership with the evergreen Jody Craddock.

And the former Hearts stopper is encouraged by his own link-up with Craddock and the rest of his defensive colleagues.

“Partnerships are important but it’s not just at centre-half, it’s the whole back four, you need to get to know the players around you to give the team a solid base,” said Berra.

“We’ve had to chop and change this season and last season and we’ve dealt with it.

“I’ve settled and adapted since I came from Scotland and I think I’ve held my own in the Premier League.

“I do still make mistakes but I’ll learn from them and keep on improving.

“As a centre-half, you’ve got to be consistent – there’s no point being rated as nine out of 10 in one game and then five in the next.

“It’s better being seven or eight out of 10 all the time, grinding away and winning your headers and tackles.”

Wolves are looking to go one better than last season, when they collected two draws against Villa in their first year back in the Premier League.

But Berra is expecting a tough test from whichever combination of strikers new Villa Park chief Gerard Houllier selects for his first Premier League game in charge.

“Last season we had two good draws against them,” said the 25-year-old. “We came from behind at Molineux and at Villa Park we were disappointed to draw 2-2 after leading 2-1 with about 10 minutes to go.

“But they’ve got a new gaffer so they’ll be up for it and it’s going to be a difficult game.

“People say Carew’s not fast, but trust me, he is!

“Heskey is strong, physical and fast, they’re both big international players who were signed for a lot of money.

“Agbonlahor can go short or long and he’s lightning quick, but his all-round game has improved and he’s a handful on his day.

“They’re big, strong, fast, they can hold the ball up and score goals – they’ve got everything really.

“Anyone would want them in your team, so whoever is playing up front, it’s going to be a difficult game.

“I read the other day that is was Houllier who signed Heskey for £11m and it’s a clean slate for everyone. They’ll all be looking to impress tomorrow.”

And, despite the threat of Villa’s array of strikers, Berra admits there is still room for improvement from the Wolves back four.

“We’ve scored in every game but we’ve also conceded in every one too. As a defender, I’d rather keep it tight at the back and keep clean sheets,” he said.

“That’s something we work on – it’s a team game so we defend as a team and we attack as a team.

“We’re working on our defensive side of the game and there’s a lot to come from us.”

Wolves enter tomorrow’s game unbeaten in four matches at home so far this season.

And Berra is confident they can continue that run in the hot-house atmosphere of their first derby of the season.

“We’ve had a win and a draw in the League so far and we know that a lot of the points teams accumulate come from their home form,” he said.

“We want to make Molineux a hard place to come to and we want to win as many games and take as many points there as possible.

“Last season our away form was really good, but if we can improve on our home form and try to keep the standard of our away performances, then we’ll be fine.

“I expect it to be a full house and I’m sure the fans will be very vocal.

“We’ll be expecting a tough game but so will Villa.”

A Double Decker Bus turns quicker than Berra does, and far to much shirt pulling, but although you were to blame for the Heskey goal, why didnt another player help you out by standing in front of him. That late in the game you should never have been left 1-on-1 with a player?. Ive said ALL i can keep saying about STEPHEN WARD. Get rid of him dont drop him SELL him, just think if MM did get sacked? he would come back and take the likes of ‘WARD,BERRA’ two of our best defenders? mmmmm wishful thinking me thinks. UTW
