Stourbridge beat young Wolves side
Thursday 23rd September 2010, 9:01AM BST.
Stourbridge progressed to the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup with a 3-1 win over the Wolves development squad.
The Glassboys handed a start to defender Sam Smith, making a welcome return after a remarkable recovery from a cruciate injury sustained in February.
And Stourbridge opened the scoring with 27 minutes on the clock.
A low free-kick from just outside the box by Linden Dovey appeared to be covered by keeper Aaron McCarey, but the ball slipped through his grasp and squirmed over the line.
In the 36th minute the Glassboys doubled their lead from the penalty spot, with Ben Billingham successfully converting after Josh Craddock had been upended by Scott Malone inside the box.
Wolves made a better start to the second period without making much head-way on the Stourbridge goal.
On 69 minutes the ball dropped invitingly to Nathan Rooney who struck a low 20-yard shot wide.
Five minutes from time David Plinston sealed the win for the home side with a terrific volley from the edge of the box.
Two minutes into stoppage time Anthony Forde pulled a goal back, with a fine 30-yard dipping shot past Todd Henderson and into the top corner.
