Matt Murray’s coming back to Wolves
Thursday 23rd September 2010, 10:45AM BST.
Wolves will welcome Matt Murray back on the Molineux pitch on Sunday to say a final thank you at the Villa game.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper announced his retirement last month and both he and the club have been inundated with messages of goodwill.
Murray has agreed to walk out onto the pitch at half-time, and will be joined by Murray wife Chloe and daughters Taliya, six, and Imogen, who will be two in December.
He said: “I was immediately made aware of just how many thanks and good luck messages were coming into the club and being passed on to the media after I announced my decision.
“I was always keen to say a public thank you to everyone, but unfortunately the Newcastle game came too soon when I was feeling a bit too emotional.
“It’s been strange that there hasn’t been another home match in the league until now, but I’m looking forward to coming back on Sunday.
“The Wolves supporters have always been fantastic to me and I’m delighted the club have given me a chance to come and say goodbye during the Villa game.”
The former England under-21 international made 100 appearances for Wolves, proving the club’s undoubted number one during his two main seasons of 2002-03 and 2006-07 when his form marked him out as his country’s first-choice of the future.
Wolves want as many fans as possible to remain in their seats during half-time, including any Villa fans who are welcome to show their appreciation.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “It’s going to be a special one for the chance to say an ‘official’ playing farewell to one of the club’s favourite sons over the last decade.
“He’s far too modest and will probably be greatly embarrassed, but I’m sure our fans will give Matt the tribute he so richly deserves.
“We want fans to pay their own tributes to a top quality goalkeeper and a thoroughly decent human being.”
