Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Dave Jones eyes capital gain in Wolves clash
Thursday 16th September 2010, 12:00PM BST.
Wolves’ matchwinner the last time they played Tottenham – David Jones – could win an immediate recall for Saturday’s trip to White Hart Lane.
Jones was out of the starting line-up for the first time in 20 Premier League games in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Fulham when Michael Mancienne was preferred in his place.
But boss Mick McCarthy admitted the midfielder, who capped that superb 18-pass move in the 1-0 double-clinching win over Spurs in February, could be back in the team to face Harry Redknapp’s side in what could be a return to the 4-5-1 system used so effectively last term.
“He might play Saturday. Who’s to say he won’t?” said the boss.
“If ‘Jonah’ just keeps doing what he’s doing and trains like he always does, then he’s got a chance because he’s a good pro.”
McCarthy again insisted he had no problem picking the 25-year-old, even though he only has nine months left on his contract after so far failing to agree a new deal.
“The fact he’s not signed a contract is the first question people ask but it has no bearing on anything,” said the boss. ‘Jonah’ is a wonderful professional. He started the first three games and then missed one.
“Have a look at the last time when I left him out before last Saturday – it was Liverpool at home last January. So to be fair, he’s had a decent run.”
The last time Wolves were at White Hart Lane, they did their homework as Matt Jarvis doubled up superbly with Stephen Ward to subdue dangerman Aaron Lennon as they shocked Spurs to win 1-0.
“I like to think we do our homework regularly – sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t,” added McCarthy.
“It just looks like we’re all good coaches and managers when we do.
“It takes all sorts of styles to win football matches – it’s a real eclectic mix. If you’ve just got 11 footballers in the team, you’re not going to win anything. You’ve got to have people to win the ball back, people to spray it around, people who can defend, people who can cross it and score goals.”
Meanwhile, McCarthy today warned his defensive wall that their jobs are on the line.
McCarthy’s side tasted defeat for the first time this season last Saturday when Moussa Dembele’s last minute deflected shot following a free-kick condemned them to a 2-1 setback at Fulham.
And the fact the Belgian’s deflected effort so easily pierced the flimsy, four-man wall has left the Molineux chief in no mood to tolerate a repeat again as Wolves prepare to return to London to face Tottenham on Saturday.
“They made a mistake but it only becomes a problem if it happens again,” said McCarthy.
“You get forgiven once but to do it the second time is unforgiveable.
“It was a dreadful one to concede – the defensive wall was poor.
“It was awful defending by us but it was a mistake and all lads make mistakes. They shouldn’t have jumped because he was only ever going to smash it.”

The game on Saturday will be difficult. Not only does McCarthy and his team do their homework, but so does Harry Redknap. No doubt lessons from last season will have been learnt.
It will be no surprise to see a return to the 4-5-1 system with Jones reinstated into the midfield and Doyle the single striker. If Van Damme is not fit then Guedioura should play on the right of midfield.

SPUR1950. You need to stop reading incorrect newspaper reports and only commenting on the team you support. That is of course if you go and watch live football.

Yeah, Match of the Day is great isn’t it?! Always give the clearest of pictures on every game played, no bias and all the action that happened over 90 minutes rolled into 2 minutes.

Spur1950 – Nice to see you jumping on the band wagon. If the papers and press say aliens are real will you believe that??? Last time i looked Football was a contact sport look at other prem players like Scholes, Essien, Song hard tacklers no tag so why should Henry and Wolves get one.

2. Spur1950….what’s the matter my friend ? Frightened that the big bad wolf is gonna get your cockerel !! Grow up mate, it’s a man’s game and a physical one. How much of the game against Fulham did you see to form your totally unbiased opinion ? You make no mention of the tackle Haageland made n Doyle when he was the last man – should have been a straight red and Murphey’s assault on henry should also have been a red. General concensus of opinion is that Henry’s tackle on Zamora was perfectly fair – it was the way he fell.
If as your name suggests that you have supported the Spurs since 1950 then you will remember Dave McKay…..he was never backwards in putting the boot in !!
Finally if it’s allto rough for you, may I suggest you take upknitting

May I finally suggest that

spur1950 – did you send this out from the pub? You need to sort out a spell checker or something.
Don’t jump on the media band wagon; Wolves are a hardworking and honest team. I love Harry and watching Tottenham but if spurs didn’t go in hard too they wouldn’t have qualified for the Champions League. It’s a man’s game so live with it.
Perhaps you’re just a baggies fan trying to wind us up…

To all Wolves fans ignore the muppet aka spur1950 – don’t know where he is coming from.
I expect a hard but clean game on Saturday and one in which Spurs must roll up their sleeves if we want the 3 points. Wolves proved last season they are no pushover and what bits I have seen on the box this season, I think my team are going to have to work a lot harder and not just turn up and expect the win – like Wigan a few weeks ago!
Prediction Spurs 2 Wolves 1
I will be there at the Lane and welcome all the Wolves fans unlike spur1950 – incidentally spur1950 – are you going?

4-5-1 makes sense for the Spurs game. We haven’t kept a clean sheet so far this season.
