Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Sam Vokes edges nearer return to Wolves
Saturday 4th September 2010, 12:57PM BST.
Wolves striker Sam Vokes has returned to light training – but will remain out of contention for up to four weeks.
The 20-year-old tore his hamstring within 10 minutes of his debut on loan at Bristol City last month.
Vokes is around halfway through his recovery period and stressed he is still well short of being fit as he continues to work at Compton.
But, after being loaned to the Ashton Gate club until January, the Wales international wants to make up for lost time. “I’m making good progress,” said Vokes. “I’ve been outside doing a bit of jogging this week and it’s nice to be out of the gym.
“I’ve been out for three-and-a-half weeks and it will probably be the same again before I’m back.”
Vokes had been touted as a possible answer to boss Mick McCarthy’s striking dilemma after Andy Keogh was allowed to join Cardiff before Birmingham’s Marcus Bent was signed on loan.
But the youngster cannot play for Wolves again until his loan expires. “The loan runs to January so I think the plan is to go back to Bristol City,” said Vokes.
“Hopefully I can get some game time there, which was the main objective of going, and if I can do that, hopefully some goals will come as well.”
Vokes admitted his frustration after being injured so quickly.
“It was very frustrating,” he said. “I thought I’d had a good pre-season and got up to a good level of fitness.
“I went on loan to get some football and unfortunately within 10 minutes tore my hamstring, which was a bit of a nightmare.
“I was just trying to bring a ball out of the air and stretched a bit too far and it popped. I tore it quite badly.”
Vokes also had to cope with a change of manager after Steve Coppell’s unexpected decision to quit.
Thankfully, the striker already knew Keith Millen, who stepped up from number two into the hotseat.
“I get on quite well with Keith,” he said.
“It’s not a massive change so hopefully I can get in the team.”

This is really bad news for Wolves he isn’t prolific enough and misses open goals. -.-

Give he back to Boscombe & Bournemouth hes suited to low divisions.

I think he will leave us anyway. He’s not remotely Premiership class.

Let’s hope he recovers from his injury soon and can play in a few games for Bristol City before his loan period expires.
Sam Vokes is one of those players that the fans want to succeed but have doubts.
He is at an age now where he must start to produce good performances that help win games. I am one of those who don’t believe he is good enough for the top flight of football.
I hope I’m proved wrong.

Thats right jack. And Doyle, and Ebanks AND Fletcher. As good a striking department outside the top 6! Who have you got up front again? White nose bednar, mr prolific ishmael and a celtic/mowbray reject!

Vokes is championship standard at best, not gud enuf. Our team is a gud deal weaker if we have to start a game wiv Blake, Fletcher or Doyle partnering Vokes in a 2 man attack….

Decent player,he will improve like the big striker at Newcastle.A bit worrying that he pulled a hamstring, did he warm up correctly,or maybe needs to do the yoga like his inured team mate.

2,3,4….
Abit harsh on the lad aint it? Sam is still only 20 and always looks a handful for defenders with his physical approach when he comes on, still very much learning his trade so its abit early to be writing him off I reckon. Get back soon Vokesy and bang in a few goals for Bristol before coming back to replace Bent in January. As for missing open goals I can only recall that one against Utd last season when he had only just come on the pitch, yes he should of scored but he aint the first or last striker whos gonna miss a sitter, Tevez’s last week was far worse but he aint suddenly a bad player is he?….
Up the wolves…

I agree with a few on here. Vokes should not be written off for one miss against Man Utd. There have been far worse sitters spooned by big Chris, Tevez and Yakubu. Still young and has played a few internationals. I hope he makes it!
1) JTH – You have a terrific array of strikers at the Poorthorns….not!
