Wolves swoop to sign Marcus Bent

Wolves today sealed the low-key loan signing of Birmingham striker Marcus Bent to plug their gap for a fourth striker.

The 32-year-old has signed an initial 17-week deal for Wolves to become his 14th club, in what is expected to be their last business before today’s 6pm transfer window deadline.

Bent becomes Wolves’ seventh summer signing, of which three are on loan, joining Geoffrey Mujangi Bia and Michael Mancienne.

Boss Mick McCarthy has swooped for Bent after considering moves for free agent Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Hull’s injured forward Caleb Folan following the departure of Andy Keogh to Cardiff on a season-long loan.

Much-travelled Bent, who joined Blues for £1m from Charlton two years ago, has not played for the St Andrew’s club since April 2009.

Trumped by Cameron Jerome, Christian Benitez, Garry O’Connor and Kevin Phillips last season, his only first-team football came on loan in the Championship at Middlesbrough and QPR, where he played seven and three games respectively without scoring.

But his highlight was playing every game bar one for Everton in 2004-05, often as a lone frontman, when the Toffees finished fourth to qualify for the Champions League.

But he will have his work cut out competing with Kevin Doyle, Steven Fletcher and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

“Marcus is an experienced striker who has played plenty of Premier League football and scored goals,” said chief executive Jez Moxey.

“People still talk about whether we’ve got enough Premier League experience, and Marcus will add to that. He’s also a different type of striker to what we have in that he’s a physical presence.

“We needed someone after the departure of Andy Keogh.”

OK – well I thought Jason Roberts was keeping it realistic, but we seem to have signed a poor man’s Jason Roberts. I dread to think how many times ‘lack of ambition’ will be used on these reply pages today, but he’s ours now and 4th choice (definitely 4th choice!!) so good luck to him.

Before people come on here complaining, please remember that Marcus Bent is 4th in the striking pecking order.

In his favour, he has always been hard working and maintained high fitness levels.

I would obviously not want Wolves to sign him permanently but as a cheap player to use as a last resort if we were to collect three injuries, this is a good move.

Be aware though that Mick would probably switch to a lone striker before using Bent, that is why I see him only as an emergency player. Particularly is Sylvan keeps picking up goals!

18 Golden Balls – Vokes is injured for at least two months you cretin!

I’ve always been impressed with Bent. Obviously it goes without saying that I’d rather we were signing the Marcus Bent of 6-7 years ago, but he’s functional and will do a job. We can’t sign a ‘marquee’ player without risking upsetting the promising setup we’ve already got in Doyle, SEB & Fletcher. Bent will come here knowing he’s largely going to be on the bench, but if he comes on and nicks us the odd goal here and there, then I think it’s a sensible and financially prudent loan signing.

Whether you like him or not, his goal record is FAR superior to Keogh’s 1 in 6 ratio, and that alone makes him far more of a threat (both in the air and on the deck).

As for 21 Wolves AY I – why on Earth would anybody at Wolves be panicking or desperate after the fine start we’ve made to the season? Wind your neck in!

As Pete (17) says, he’s only a back-up striker on loan and it’s only for 4 months anyway!
All the ‘oh no’, ‘it’s a wind up’ and ‘tell me it’s a joke’ comments are over-reactions to a situation where McCarthy is NOT going to pay a 7 figure sum for a bench warming striker!
The fact that Keogh has gone does little to weaken our strike force as he was not exactly prolific in front of goal now was he?
Bent therefore, cannot do any worse!
IF come January we need someone to bolster our strike force, I am sure Mick will have identified a player who fits the bill AND be available at the right price but we shall see.
Personally I do not think another striker will be necessary at all as the strike force we have already will cause teams enough problems.

Need I remind people about the underwhelming reaction of most fans to the signing of Fletcher in the summer? Nobody’s whingeing about that anymore after his debut against Stoke.

At least let him prove himself to be rubbish in a Wolves shirt before you criticise!

I watched Iwelumo up front for Brighton against Bristol City in a play off final a few years back (my Dad’s a Brighton fan) and Big Chris was absolutely hopeless. I feared the worst when we signed him, but he was first class and I was proved wrong.

HAS IT OCCURRED to any of you doom merchants that Wolves are NOT the most inspiring of Prem outfits to join at this particular point in time? Young prem players will only come on loan to a club like Wolves if they´re guaranteed first teem football, not sitting in fourth place. Likewise what proven striker would want to come to do that either? The guy is only here as back up until January when the window opens again. Better pull yer heads out from where the sun don´t shine and stop being so damn negative. Give the guy a break and the management at the club one as well, please. We´re not fashionable enough yet to attract big names. Get real please and get behind the team, whoever happens to be in it. That´s often worth another player, in case you hadn´t noticed. UTW!

Hold on all you moaners! MM was looking for a 4th striker, a player who would step in if two of our three strikers were to be injured at the same time. Bent’s not going to moan about keeping the bench warm, not costing us any money, yet he has premiership experience and over a 100 goals to his name. As a front line striker how many goals did Andy Keogh get? I agree that Vokes or Maierhoffer could have been kept, but their ‘year out’ should bring them back next year better and, in Maierhoffer’s case, much wiser. Give Bent a chance before rubbishing him. Our squad looks good now and I’ve no doubts that we’ll be more than holding our own this season. Onwards and upwards!!

So realistically who did we want to see at the Wolves?

Keane.. forget it, will cost to much even if he wanted to come which I don’t think he wants to. How does he fit into the 3 strikers we have now.. someone will be bench warming, Mick and Wolves have paid the cash for Fletcher and is more than happy with SEB and Doyle! Our main striker options are sorted.

The Hoff.. shot his mouth off when he shouldn’t! His days were numbered.

Keogh.. does not want to be 4th choice.. needs to play which he may well achieve at Cardiff.

Vokes.. needs to play, still young. Loan deal will be good for him. Obviously he’s injured and out at the mo.

Caleb Folan.. not interested in coming and injured I believe.

Jason Roberts.. not sure if we were at all bothered about him.. and him us!

Marcus Bent.. From 4th choice will do a job for us.. fit, ready to go, in need of a new challenge and environment. For a 4 month loan move lets give him a chance.

Personally if he was available, and fit I’d have gone for Kevin Phillips.. at least we wouldnt have to witness him score against us again!

The first thing to say is that McCarthy and the team exceed expectation through a brilliant work ethic on and off the pitch. BUT I still do not buy the Morgan Moxey talk they are trying to acheive Premiership status on the cheap and luckily for them McCarthy is delivering but this is not sustainable. If they are serious they have to show more commitment than Marcus Bent any idea of Robbie Keane coming back is ridiculous but there are loads of players below this level that would strengthen our squad and they need to show ambition.

Vokes – had to go on loan to get some games – for his future.
Iwelumo – there was money on the table and he wanted games.
Hoff – Wolves want to get what they can for him, maybe he was an unsettling influence.
Keogh – not good enough for the Premier, so get him to a club who would make a good offer for him in the future.

We need to strengthen in centre midfield and left back. Big George is a hell of a nice guy – BUT he ain’t Prem quality or anywhere near it, yet we give him another 3 year contract!!!!
Centre midfield is the engine room and we have KH who has a great engine but, it seems he can only pass the ball back from the halfway line to goalkeeper.

What’s all this come back keogh? Last season gainst Arsenal at the emirates running into added time whilst the scores remained 0-0 and we were a man light, Keogh decided to lob a pathetic attempt over almunia from the halfway line, which wouldn’t have been so bad had almunia been further from his line than 4 yards, needless to say we all know what happened next. Cannot forgive him after that, he was hopeless against bohemians and just cannot hold the ball up, vokes is injured, Hoff couldn’t keep his gob shut, iwelumo’s only contribution last season was to give away numerous fouls, I don’t welcome bent with open arms but he’s here now, up to Blake, fletcher, doyle to keep him out.

    Oh and 7th summer signing?
    1) Steven fletcher
    2) Stephen hunt
    3) Steven mouyokolo
    4) Adlene Guedioura
    5) Jelle Van Damme

Marcus Bent, he is one of the best in the business at holding the ball up, just ask any Everton fan when they got into Europe employing Bent as a lone striker.

I was on here last week sayin that people mentioning names such as Keane, Santa Cruz and Kezman were spouting drivel.

Caleb Folan was the name i’d pinpointed as i thought it was realistic (although i’ve read he’s injured) – he’d be happy with some sub apperances, 20 mins here and there, and could do a job if we somehow managed to lose all three of our strikers.

…but never in a million years did i think we’d include someone like M Bent in our squad of 25. This could backfire BIG TIME.

What’s the point in having someone to warm the bench if we don’t want him to come off it? Joke signing. I think i’d have preferred Keogh!!!

Let’s hope S Ward + Winnall and the rest of the kids are ahead of this deadwood…

I really can’t believe that MM has signed for a player this lazy.

I can’t actually believe we’ve signed MARCUS Bent. I seriously doubt he’ll play more than 20 minutes for us.

Even if he scores one goal and gets us three points or even salvages a point i would be happy! good luck mate!
The hoff and keogh have both gone out on loan so come the end of the season they would be worth more having had a good season rather than bench warming and not getting a game. Might be the difference between 1 million quid for both or 4 million? I am a massive fan of vokes but think he needs a bit more experience!
why do people think we can spend loads of money on a striker when we wouldnt spend more than 3 mill on mancienne! save the money and spend more in january our squad is strong now let alone when all injured players come back.
i cant believe how many whingers there are on here! we are so far unbeaten this season and extremely unlucky not to have 7 or 9 points! if we stay up we have done the job again and there would be nothing to moan about.

    To Everyone,

My God you’re a miserable bunch!

Remember a certain Karl Henry signing for us? Couldn’t get a kick at Stoke and everyone slated his signing, look at him now!

Diego Forlan, couldn’t hit a barn door at Utd and now he can’t stop scoring, star at the world cup etc etc…

The list of players that have dissappointed and then moved on and excelled is endless.

Marcus Bent is never going to star at a world cup and will maybe never be a fans player of the year but what he will provide is decent cover for our enviable strike force.

Andy Keogh is light weight, Sam Vokes is inexperianced and low on confidence and as for Stefan ‘Hoff’ he has never been a footballer.

Bent will provide decent support to our strikers. He’s strong, experienced and has an excellent attitude to the game. His fitness levels are excellent and for the sake of 4 months will fill a void left by an injured and confidence bitten Sam Vokes.

The intention was always to loan out Vokes until January and get some goals and experience under his belt and then he would be no.4. However, with his injury this hasn’t worked out.

Bent can win headers and physical battles and will free up space for SEB, Fletcher or Doyle when called upon.

He will only play the odd 25 mins and I believe can have an impact in messy games that we are struggling in.

For the next 4 months this guy is a Wolves player so lets get behind him and stop judging players on what they have or haven’t done yet!

If he scores against the Albion he’ll be a hero so please, please all stop being so fickle.

A change is as good as a rest.

    Good luck Marcus.

38 lyechris – Really? If thats the case lets bring in Rooney, Torres, Drogba, and tevez. Lets see how long the harmony would last. Of course its not just about buying better than what you have, Every club needs squad players you muppet. On paper those four strikers would strike fear into any team, but in reality, theres a good chance that there would be disilusioned players in the team, resulting in a negative mood, and potentially all four of them not playing as well as they should.

Bents not going to be first choice, and some people would say, why not keep the players we had? Well Vokes needed experience if he was ever going to break into our team, Mairhoffer opened his mouth, and didnt stand a chance of getting back into the team, and Keogh obviously wanted more footbal, which he new fourth choice wasnt going to bring him.

As well as that, Keogh is basically a poor mans Doyle, offering us nothing new, where as at least Bent would potentially offer us something different.

I feel the same as 86 – richlewis1968. We shouldn’t be getting so mad over signing a cover striker with premier league experience. If we had paid for him i would be annoyed, but this is just a loan which will cost the club little and may be a benefit in the long term if we have an injury crisis.

Has Keogh ever scored a hatrick in the PL? I think not. Yet the mighty Marcus Bent has, yet all of a sudden he is a waste of space and Keogh is suddenly a saint again.

For god’s sake stop moaning, some of you saying that it’s lack of ambition, well if spending nearly £40 million in 2 years is lack of ambition for a lower end premierleague club then alot of you need to take a look at the some of the rubbish you are spouting.

It’s not a marquee signing but why go and spend a large amount on another striker and upset the 3 we have got now, alot of the time this season we will play 1 upfront so alot of the time 2 of the main 3 may not play.

The gaffa wanted someone big & strong with premier experience who ain’t going to cost a lot, to do a covering job for our main strikers, that’s exactly what he’s got.
I’m sure Marcus realises (maybe he’s already been told) that his chances of starting a game are virtually nil, but if we need to hold on to a slender lead and/or protect one of our first line strikers when there’s only 10-15 minutes to go, he’s the man to bring on.
It’s been said in previous comments that Marcus is good at holding up play and shielding the ball, I agree, even at 32yrs old, he’s still a BIG bloke to get around/through. I don’t expect him to score goals, if he gets one, fantastic, but that’s not what he’s here for.

We have 3 very good strikers at the club fighting for 2 places.. In a prem squad you need 4 proven strikers.. Who else could we have got? He’s here until January, so if we need to strengthen then in some other area, we can. If a better stiker becomes available in January We can sign them! Keogh/Maierhoffer/Vokes out on loan they’ll gain experience and confidence from scoring goals, which they wouldnt do at wolves this season behind behind doyle/seb/fletch. and then they’ll come back next season in better condition than they would bench warming at wolves.

bent would be on sidelines at birmingham OR wolves so he wont really be bothered about who hes playing for aslong as he thinks hes got an opportunity to proove himself. he wont stay past january, that much is obvious.

he’ll offer experience to our younger players that they don’t have yet, that’s always a plus.
