Wolves 1 Newcastle 1
Saturday 28th August 2010, 5:10PM BST.
Wolves preserved their unbeaten start to the season with a point against Newcastle.
But it was a match that will be remembered for the erratic performance of referee Stuart Attwell.
The Nuneaton official booked 11 players – seven from Wolves – in what was admittedly a full-blooded encounter.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s second goal in as many games put Wolves ahead in the 43rd minute after he had headed earlier against the post before Andy Carroll equalised with a free header from Joey Barton’s free kick on 63.
And Wolves should be happy to emerge with a point in a game where they gave everything, but created nothing apart from Ebanks-Blake’s two openings, with the visitors wasteful.
Wolves made the one expected change to the side that drew 1-1 at Everton last week, with Jelle van Damme back for George Elokobi after a thigh injury, in a switch that saw Stephen Ward restored to left-back.
Wolves captain Karl Henry set the tone for a full-blooded encounter when he thundered into a tackle on Barton that thankfully both players got up from quickly.
Newcastle settled quickly however and created the first chance when Andy Carroll climbed above Jody Craddock with a header that forced Marcus Hahnemann into a simple save.
Wolves had an escape in the eighth minute when Jonas Gutierrez found himself clean through out wide and rounded Hahnemann, but the angle was too tight for him to shoot and Kevin Nolan couldn’t head home his centre.
But it was referee Attwell who sadly took centre stage with a string of decisions that enraged Wolves fans.
He first denied Mick McCarthy’s side a free kick when Kevin Doyle had his heels clipped just outside the area as he shaped to shoot.
Then when Doyle challenged Alan Smith in the air, the Wolves striker saw a free kick given against him.
And it set a tone that continued.
Wolves however had an escape when the ever-dangerous Carroll missed his kick after getting ahead of Henry from Gutierrez’s cross.
But the home side were their own worst enemy at times when they needlessly gave the ball away in midfield.
Although Newcastle were the better side for the opening 20 minutes, the tide turned with Wolves’ first corner in the 26th minute.
Ebanks-Blake headed against the post from no more than a yard out.
Newcastle wasted another chance when Nolan volleyed over from Wayne Routledge’s cross and the Toon wasted another opportunity when Carroll lashed wide from six yards out under pressure from the sliding Henry and Hahnemann when Nolan teed him up.
But Ebanks-Blake made the visitors pay for their wastefulness two minutes before the break when he rifled home an angled shot on the half volley after Matt Jarvis headed down van Damme’s cross from the right.
Newcastle equalised in the 63rd minute when Carroll was given far too much space to float home a header from eight yards from Barton’s free kick after substitute Ronald Zubar was harshly booked for a challenge on Gutierrez.
Nolan should again done better four minutes later when his volley arrowed straight at Hahnemann after Routledge beat Ward to cross.
But a draw was a fair result in the end in a match that will be remembered for Attwell’s antics.

Thanks Mr Atwell, you managed to completely FCUK that game up! A dire referring performance, looked a nailed on Penalty mid way through the second half, will have to stay up till the last game (again) of MOTD tonight to see it again.
Did anyone count the bookings?

Although I believe that Newcastle where there for the Taking, but not going to grumble at a point, 3rd in the League (At the moment) and still UNBEATEN in the League and Carling Cup, more than the Tesco down the road can say.
So UTW and to you moaners, this might cheer you up, on Talk Sport today they were talking about Javis for England

its a sign the blue eyed boys are back in the prem just like in the championship last season the refs a fan and gives em everything/sod wolves and the other midland teams that founded the league, why is it the midland teams are hated so much by the officials is it the way we spake or what,,,WE ARE WOLVES,,,ilk
Report abuse
I’m not one to slag off referees but this was probably as bad a performance by the ref than Uriah Rennies back in our ill fated first season in the prem. He lost control of the game, gave decisions based which team shouted the loudest and missed clear cut decision for both sides including a foul on Smith and Henry.
I didn’t see if it was penalty but was assured by someone who saw it on the screen it ‘was a stonewaller’ i’ll accept that those things happen, I’ll even accept the odd bad decision but to consistantly produce poor decision after poor decision in what was a physical encounter but by no mean dirty should be reviewed by The Premier League.
Good luck to Newcastle, good side, great midfield I won’t even mention them with relegation candidates but unfortunately was should have been a game against two passionate supported side was ruined by a ref out his depth. Don’t send him to The Championship or League One, get him back to school. This was no professional performance.

Good result, mad refereeing. SO GLAD to see the Ebanks-Blake we knew and loved from the championship FINALLY making a return.
Seem to be having a bit of bad luck with the new signings, with every single one of them not on the field come the end of the game. Lets hope Van Damme’s injury is shortlived, he looks like this years Ronald Zubar!

The ref was awful. Jarvis should have won a penalty kick for us. The ref is a goofy!
RUBBISH,best get some players in before window shuts, with this team we will be down before christmas,we could have been 3 down at halftime if Carol had got his shooting boots on,we not played anybody yet and only had one lucky win.

worst performance by a referee i have ever seen!
as for ebanks, the goal machine is back took his goal superbly.
stuart attwell geez what can i say, he ruined the game for me, we usually get some bad refs but this ref just doesnt know how handle a game and players, suprised nobody got sent off. He let newcastle bully him into making decisions and put pressure on the ref. Jarvis got took down in the box, looked a blantant penalty to me. If this was man u ferguson would of had a cardiac lol.
anyway apart from the ref, I think its a good point but could of been 3 on a normal day. Really happy with henry thought he did a good job today, think he dealt with there midfield mugs quite well. He came over to the fans before kickoff and just after fulltime and clapped. But no doubt the moaners will be on here putting him down again. And ebanks well done, who was at the club last season? that was not ebanks blake.

After his performance this afternoon please explain to me why Karl Henry isn’t worth a place in the England squad.
Or were you shopping with the wife ?

Glad to get a point. Otherwise credot yo the lads for a battling performance. Less said about the ref, the better.

the referee Stuart Attwell was the worst referee i hav ever seen we sould of had a pen and kevin was 1 on 1 and ref said bhe fouled the defnder because he didnt jump for ball the ref should hang up the boots.

An old fashioned bruising encounter with some full blooded tackles flying in.
I don’t normally have much sympathy for Joey Barton, but he will be black and blue in the morning.
All our players gave everything, but to me Karl Henry was our man of the match.
As for Newcastle, Andy Carroll lead the line surperbly and will undoubtadly play for England in the No 9 shirt.

the ref was appalin, no wonder evry1 was singin “ur not fit to be a referee” even wen it was our freekick the ref gave it them. At least we’re still unbeaten, well dun Blake
Report abuse
The ref spoilt the game never seen so many cards dished out in a game and he missed a blatant penalty
Report abuse
Went the match
The Ref was bullied by the newcastle player and at times it was newcastle who seemed to ref the match.
And the only tackle what was a defo yellow- possibly red card from that thug barton on Jelle went unpunished.
Nolan didnt stop complianing all match, at times runing 30 yards to challange the ref who was like a little school kid being bullied by the bigger boys….
… BUT, were STILL unbeaten despite playing 12 men today.
Stuart Attwell might aswell of been in a newcastle shirt.
If i was Mick, id put an official complaint into the F.A as that ref should be punished for having no control of the game.

Oh, and my hat goes off to Ebanks Blake for getting fit and starting the season with a bang !
Looks like Fletcher & Doyle will need to up there game to get his place.

Very poor game,3 points there for the taking. Referee was shocking but we were poor too. Only Sylvan came out with any credit. Mick was too slow to make changes and seemed to have people out of position and therefore we had no real balance in the side. Got away with it today but need to improve.

thank god i don’t have to watch a Newcastle Stoke game

Three matches unbeaten, good start but only one thing to say referee spoilt the game.
.. agree with above. We were lucky to escape with a point today.
Unlike Toon we don’t seem to have gameplan. We looked like Stoke most of the game playing hardball and hoofing the ball up the field. Although the ref had a bad game we can’t blame him for creating nothing. Henry and Wardy kept us in the game.. Jones, Jarvis, Doyle were below par so nothing was going on up front.
But wasn’t it a great taken goal from SEB, reminded me of his first from the legendary game at the Valley.
Still a point on our way to survival !

Two points dropped
Eastwoods Rubbish & Grace, I think Henry’s display today disproved your comments about my post about him, disappointing you cannot keep your comments to me and other supporters to the point without personalising them.
He was lucky not to have been sent off, general play and Captaincy poor.
Our possession and passing accuracy poor, defence caught out too many times.
Midfield not in the game, hence so many attacks from Newcastle
Time to make a change to the team, these are games we should win.
Delighted for SEB, many more goals to come from him.
For us to get 7 bookings shows how much we were struggling to contain Newcastle today.
Wolves,,the home side, should have won this match, one of the easier games on paper for them o face this season.
Not having Fletcher in the side was a great disappointment.and hope and pray we can pickup another striker in the next days
Report abuse
feel like this was 2 points dropped, but would have taken a draw before kick off… how henry didnt get sent off god knows what he was thinking! lol

Just watched on MOD and was a gutsy performance, especially from Karl Henry. He really got stuck in which is what we need. Brilliant goal by SEB and although it looked like a fair result, we should of had a penalty for sure. Best position we’ve been in for well over 35 years and lets hope we can keep this up!
Great goal by SEB, poor defending throughout. Hanneman had an attack of the “Hennessy’s” today and looked decidedly ropey at times.
Carl Henry did a proper job on Joey Barton, who must still be taking the tablets because in previous seasons he would probably have punched the Skipper in the mouth!!
Another point gained. Job well done.
UP THE WOLVES!!!

Good point and we’re still unbeaten this season. I think we may need some decent defenders if we want to improve on last season’s position. Berra is a bit of a worry at times hence our shortcomings at the back.
Cracker from SEB although he didn’t get a mention on MOTD. The boy is back.

By all reports a fair result. One point gained or two points lost?

Watched a rerun of the game this evening. Once again we started slowly and Newcastle were easily the better side in the first 20 minutes.
Credit to the lads to getting back into the game but I am still a little disturbed by our lack of creativity in the midfield and our persistent use of long, high balls. We just look average when we resort to these tactics. Work rate and honest endeavour will only take you so far in this League. When we keep the passes shorter and on the ground we look a much better, talented team.
Ebanks-Blake took his goal well and, hopefully, it is a signal that more goals are forthcoming this season. However, I felt Doyle was not up to much in this game and Jarvis took a long time to have any real influence on events. Most definitely, Jarvis should have got a penalty but the Referee was clearly out of his depth – too many stoppages and some really poor calls on his part. However, that said, what the heck was Henry doing today? Some of his tackles were downright stupid.
Instead of trying to sign a donkey like Caleb Folan ( hopefully a rumor!!!) why not spend some money on a more creative midfield player? Hopefully, some of our injured players will be available soon.
Good tackles by Henry, excellent goal SEB,imperious Craddock, another goal saving intervention by Ward, cannot mask for large periods of the game Newcastle looked better than us.First 20 minutes we didn’t have an attack, and in the second half we barely had a shot.It is a quality issue or lack of it in midfield and wide right.Newcastle had two decent wingers and have since signed another.WE NEED FOOTBALLERS NOT BRICKS.
Good entertainment, spoiled by a twit of a ref.
Never thought it would be easy as they have still got a solid premier backbone, I am glad we got stuck in as they tried to bully us all over he park.
Why no penalty only the guy in the middle can tell us that and I hoe the FA look at this performance.
Should have had a pen and won the game yet another poor decision against us. Mick should send dossier to FA with all these howlers against us. Draw fair result on balance of play and Newcastle look a decent side and had best of chances. Jarvo for England!
Battling performance and well worth the point. Denied nailed-on penalty by whistle-happy ref, defence still a worry. Karl Henry is surely the best available English defensive midfield player?
Riddled with errors this report!
Routledge rounded USA in the 1st half and Jarvis didn’t head the ball down for SEB’s first, he plucked it out the air with the outside of his boot himself!
2 points dropped again, you must win home games and this one was there for the taking.defence not good enough and neither is the midfield and ward is a joke.
Very disjointed performance. Second half was atrocious and we can look forward to some right old palings if we continue like that against the better opposition. Fletcher did nothing when he came on, and looks far from being a saviour. Schoolboy defending for their goal, and thanks ref for wasting so much time with bookings that you stopped Newcastle from getting a winner, because, let’s be honest , there was only one team going to win it. Yes it was a penalty, and one of many poor Attwell decisions, but, this should not detract from the fact that we were clueless and are lacking real quality all over the park to move us forward. This will cost us dear as we play the “better” teams

man of the match from henry did what the boss wanted .under rated by so many fans.supports the club loves the club and it shows.would cost 10 million to replace him………….

First of all, I like to wish big Matt Murray all the best with his future, i suspect coaching will be his next line of work ideally with Wolves, such a shame with injuries and what promised a great career, but there’s no doubt retirement was unfortunately the most likely out come. So good luck Matt.
Now, the game, a bit of a throw back to a 70′s or 80′s combatitive nature of football. Both sides were at it, so I was surprised no one got sent off, I can’t quite remember the Barton challenge on Van Damme and I haven’t seen it on TV, MOTD highlighted Wolves’ worse tackles and Henry made a shocker on Barton which from the Steve Bull upper view didn’t look so bad until the TV highlights. Despite the blood and thunder, Newcastle started off the better side and overall had the better chances, Carroll was the best player on the pitch, still physical but his movement was great, decent touch, hold up play and the plenty of energy. He had our back four rattled, Hahnemann tipped over his header in the first half, guilty of wasting an great chance before Wolves took the lead. Glad to see him off in the second half.
The first half performance wasn’t great from Wolves, again creativity was non existent until after 20 minutes when Blake hit the post with a header and fair play to the guy, I doubted him last season and how well he made his goal was excellent. Great first touch to set the ball and even better strike, however he had no service really from the full 90. Jarvis couldn’t get involved in a attacking sense and even slightly worrying Newcastle looked to have the more quality in their ranks, yes Barton is no saint but he created most of the good play that Newcsatle had. An excellent free kick with a great header from Carroll, Hahnemann was the more busier goal keeper, a great save to stop Nolan on the volley and there was Ward also to save the day as a dipping head looked to hitting the net until Wardy intervened.
I looked at the result as a point gained rather two dropped, we can’t afford to have sloppy openings against the sides who have the more firepower, every game so far wolves started as a team half sleep, David Jones wasn’t doing much, no at all in fact, Paul Franks on WM defending him by saying ‘it wasn’t the game for him’ what a rubbish excuse the tough match did not stop the Toon playing and creating opportunities. Maybe he’s on orders to sit too deep and this is worrying for the rest of season as speculation in the sunday morning papers suggest that Milijias might out the door, so any team who stop Jarvo can cut Wolves service supply to the strikers. Looks like goals will be hard to come by again for the reason of the lack of creativity.
Our defence might also not get away with being so easily cut apart, Routledge got through with ease in the opening minutes, Hahnemann in no-mands-land and fancifully the winger didn’t find another black and white striped player to net the goal. So, although it looks rosy on the league table, we need to improve for next run of games. We will most likely fall down gradually but there things in the side that worry me or am I just going over the top? We should be okay but I think this team could do better than this workmanlike style.
Not a pretty game, but a well deserved point. The match could have gone either way to be fair, but we really can’t complain about the start to the season we’ve had. With the form the next 3 teams we have to play (Fulham, Spurs and Villa) I think we can do well there as well. If we can pick up another 5 points at least in those fixtures, then I will start to getting (Dare I say it) positive of a solid midtable finish for us!
And not only should Jarvis get a mention for an England call up, what about Sylvan and Henry? Glad to see Sylvan back on top form again and if you need a solid defensive midfielder to break up play, Henry is proving his worth there. It’s no wonder other teams had been sniffing around him, despite some naysayers that can’t see the important role he plays for the club… It’s hard to see how Mancienne will fit in to the team at the minute.
Jelle has down well with his crossing contributions, but once we get Hunt and Kightly fit, I think we will so many attacking options that will see his banging in a few more goals.
Up the Wolves!

Nice to see the usual moaning morons are out again, the fact that we created nothing was down to one person and one person only -THE REF! for those of you who went (I did)please explain to me how he booked Doyle? and why!
Now Henry? anybody who knows me knows that in the past I have run him down-BUT yesterday the guy was awsum, crunching in the tackle, and all over the park + leading by example, so all you moaners having a go at him could not have been at the game! if you were you saw a different one to me, the Newcastle fans are moaning calling us a championship team, and dirty etc, etc, that’s rich when how the hell Carrol stayed on the pitch is anyones guess, he should have been off before he scored, the pen – stonewaller +red card, but ref bottled it, once again left the match talking about the ref! and not the match which is wrong.
Top four ay bad………We are Wolves…Onwards and upwards….

Larl Henry was magnificent today. He gave two of the game’s hard men – Smith and Barton – one of the hardest days of their careers. Apart from the late challenge on Baron which was clumsy rather than malicious, his tackling was fair but as tough as you’ll see from anyone in any Prem team. A real captain’s performance from a local boy.
Th epenalty decision was a disgrace. A second goal would have changed the complexion of the match completely.
Sure, there will be ups and downs this season but things are looking good
Remember all of the derision last year when it was first mentioned Karl Henry could be an England player. Well, I don’t see any English born midfielders playing as well as KH is at the moment and one thing’s for sure, he’d play with more pride and passion than some of the money-grabbing so-called superstars.

Best post came from #32. He saw the game spot on. Henry for England? Rubbish. He is a gritty plodder who lacks imagination, pace and talent for the game at a higher level. He is tough and can be a sparkplug for us at times, so I have no problem with him most of the time, but to imagine him playing for England? Ridiculous. We would certainly benefit from a more creative midfielder who could control the game through pace and passing ability. Sure, bring on Messi! :-)
It was such a shame to have been subjected to this refeeering abomination. Clearly out of his depth. We do need to get our points at home from the bottom 10. We need to come out and play as we did against Stoke, being offensive and trying to control the ball. The first 20 minutes of the past two games have been relegation quality. We need better.
Having said that, 2 points from the the past two games, given how we played, is a good result.

very very poor referee, lost control of game to players. all of the “negatives” on here” AS USUAL” SAYING WE WERE LUCKY TO GET A POINT, get a grip, who cares! on the sheet it will read 1-1 , not that newcastle shouldve won , and no more players will be coming in either for all those asking for em!! never satisfied some people !!!!!

Atwell should be dropped from the Referees list. That was a stonewall penalty but he chickened out and allowed Newcastle to bully him. Now,mick, you have to sort your defence out too much lack of concentration at crucial moments and you know very well that you still need a good central defender and a good striker.Keane knows where the back of the net is and would probably come if only on loan for the season.O`Hara is another who has an eye for a goal.Don`t let Moxey kid you that there is no money left you`ve only spent £18m.you need to be quick or we will go back to last seasons struggle and we have had a better start this season don`t let Moxey ruin it.

1) Referee really REALLY screwed this one up – but will no doubt get away with it as the useless FA sit on their Ars*s and do nothing about it. Completely failed to let the game flow, and was too easily pressured by Newcastles players.
2) Don’t mind Andy Carrol, but didn’t see anything spectacular out there from him.
3) Did not like some of the diving tactics used by Newcastle – suprised if their fans put up with boring/ bland style of football.
4) Was Doyle actually offside – haven’t seen replays yet!?
5) Video technology needed. Once again, we’ll see the smaller teams in the league finish the season with about half the number of penalties awarded to the top 6.

Pleasedto get a point but we were poor in mid-field, Henry was lucky he ws not sent off. He does lack vision and his distribution to the forwards is poor.
MM lost us the game when he sent on Zuba he was out of position all the time whereas Foley was stopping Newcastles attacks down his flank. I also don’t see how he can bring on a player and expect him to perform miracles in 10 mins ie Fletcher.
Jarvis is inefective when he has Ward beghind him because he does not get any service. Im sorry but Ward is not a premiership player bring in Mancienne.
My mate left 5 mins early because he thought ATTWELL might start give cards to the supporters.

A much needed point from a scrappy game! This team played well for the quality that they have but we still need someone in midfield a creative player and better defence. The ball was lost too easily and given away. Matt Jarvis again played his socks off and cant wait till Hunt is fit and him on the other wing! SEB is certainly improving and is full of goals but only if he gets the service!
The way we were carved apart by Newcastle only for them not to take their chances was numerous in the first half…..we wont be so lucky against the top four!
The ref was poor to say the least, a definite penalty and booked Doyle…..Why?! Henry wasn’t so much dominating in midfield but going in hard and he always seems to gob off to the ref and not drop it and walk away…he will get his comeupance one day and we will pay for it so Karl please close it!
It is a good start to the season and the lads seem to have fight in them. Well done!

As usual, Wolves are playing against the referee in addition to the opposition. When we were in the Premiership with Dave Jones, that season we were awarded not one penalty from the first to the last match. Saturday appears to have started in the same way. Imagine if that had been Rooney going down in the penalty area at Old Trafford. The ref would have been pointing to the spot before he hit he floor.
Mick McCarthy needs to be more forceful in his approach to incompetent officialdom like we saw on Saturday. He is far too accepting. Fergusson would have been ranting in the Sunday papers after that display.
I’m afraid Wolves don’t find favour with officials and it costs points. In addition, we don’t find favour with the media. Two weeks running we have been last on Match of the Day. Obviously not important enough. London clubs appear to be the only ones playing in the Premiership.

Terrific to get a point and be were we are in the league.
The performance was certainly based around GRAFT and nothing else other than SEB’S goal.
Newcastle made us look lame at times but they missed a couple of SITTERS.
Jarvis should have had a PENALTY so the result could have been diffrent even though the reality remains we showed no creativity or footballing ability.
I do think this is not the players FAULT as they can PLAY it is more to do with the tactics and the negative nature of our MANAGER.The team reflects the MANAGER,and MICKO is a straight talking hardworking individual, who does not show flair, imagination and beleif,He always show’s ugly and graft and safety.
We were at home ,going into thegame unbeaten yet again we started POORLY,MICKO as made this point alreay this season and many times last season yet it remains.
Henry was on fire but some of his TACkles WERE very rash and could have been sent off.
Micko said he would never go to dirty tricks in this game he did.
MICKO let the players express themselves on teams, play players in position PLEASE,off course I am happy at the points taken, but I am a realist the two drawn games could have been lost JUST AS EASILY by a few goals.!
DOYLE the superman of last season looks poor,I quoted many times that he was not what we were being told by MICKO.Doyle needs to show real desire and appetite fom the SOUL.

Did anyone else notice Charlie Nicholas saying it wasn’t a penalty on Jarvis? I think it’s called a ‘stonewaller’ in the game! Good point against a form team! Henry roughing up Barton was quality!

Sorry don’t know what happened there!!
I posted it before I’d before I finished.
In the end it was a decent point, they come with their tales up & the ref did his best to make sure they stayed that way, the national press keep banging on about the treatment of Barton, what about all the unpunished fouls on Doyle for the 1st 15 mins, attwell the Geordie caused most of the problems in the, he was way out of his depth on Saturday & don’t even get me started on the penalty, he should be relieved of his duties where reffing pro football is concerned, but the fa will do nothing as usual, they’re just a joke only interested in collecting money & fining clubs outside the top 6!!!!!
Here endeth the rant.
Overall really happy with the start, given our injuries.

Barton’s handeling of his targeting has shown nothing but his new maturity to the game, and with that cross onto carroll, silenced the critics. His play over the past 2 matches has shown a completely fresh player, he might as well be added to our transfer-ins for this summers window.
Carroll playing with an injury and constantly causing all sorts of trouble for your backs, shows what a player he is. However, i do not want him going to the international side, let him concentrate of his club level football first.
referee this referee that, the first target for disheartened fans. Yeah, there were a few dodgy calls, and both teams were victim for them, but let it go. Wolves were VERY lucky to get the first stab, but instead of consolidating on it, you let it fly for thugby tactics.
Leave it for the school yard, puppies.
