Mancienne move on as Keogh joins Cardiff

Michael Mancienne was today poised to complete his return to Molineux on a season-long loan following Andy Keogh’s departure to Cardiff on a similar basis.

Wolves are also eyeing a more minor swoop for another striker before the transfer window shuts after Keogh’s exit made it four forwards to leave this summer.

The Ireland international’s switch is with a view to a permanent switch and triggered the fresh move for Mancienne, with Chelsea finally agreeing to allow the utility man to rejoin Wolves today.

Wolves’ £3m bid fell well short of Chelsea’s £5m valuation, but with neither club willing to budge, a compromise has been reached to allow the 22-year-old the chance of regular football for a third spell at Molineux.

Personal terms have been agreed and Mancienne could be available for the visit of Newcastle on Saturday.

Interest from Spain and a link with the Magpies failed to firm up because of Chelsea’s hardline stance on a player who has played just six games in four years for them.

Wolves, who now see Mancienne primarily as a holding midfielder, were always the player’s first choice because of the way he has developed under boss Mick McCarthy and how well he has settled into the city, where he has a house ready to move into.

Keogh’s exit after 23 goals in 129 games left McCarthy light after the £500,000 departure of Chris Iwelumo to Burnley and the outgoing loans of Stefan Maierhofer, Sam Vokes and now Keogh.

And although McCarthy’s search is highly unlikely to include recently-linked Hull forward Caleb Folan- who is injured anyway – Molineux top brass have concluded that with only one striker likely to be used in a lot of games – like for almost half of last season – the squad could run with fewer forwards.

Keogh, who joins former Molineux men Lee Naylor, Gabor Gyepes, Jay Bothroyd and on-loan Seyi Olofinjana under Dave Jones, replaces Leeds-bound Ross McCormack after the Whites refused to meet Wolves’ £2.5m asking price.

McCarthy confirmed Keogh’s departure after last night’s 2-1 Carling Cup win over Southend, saying: “It’s a racing certainty Andy is going to Cardiff.

“Andy has been fabulous here. But he doesn’t want to be fourth in line here which I fully understand.”

I wouldnt mind a quality young striker on loan from someone like Arsenal. Whoever we get, they probably arent going to be ahead of Fletcher or Doyle, and maybe not ahead of Blake either, so it might be a good idea to get a youngster in, who could maybe add something different to the team.

If we didnt bring in a forward, we would only have 3 senior strikers, which could be a problem, unless Mick considers bringing through some of our youth players. As for Mancienne, it would only be a good move signing him again, so lets hope that deal goes through soon.

Ship out Keogh and go get Mancienne and Caleb Folan – job done.

I’m not Mancienne’s biggest fan although it’s obvious he has much promise. He’s very light for a central defence but i see him as a leading DM in years to come as he reads the game very well. Certainly a fine back-up to Henry.

Folan – certainly not a 1st team regular and 4th in line. But he’s proven he can score goals at prem level – good enough to sit on the bench. Put it this way… In a situation where Fletch, Doyle and SEB are injured, i’d much rather have Folan up front on his own than Keogh!

thats just a few ideal candidates! but i doubt mick will get in a striker that is brilliant cause he has put doyle and fletch as our main 2 strikers so i think he will just get someone in that is going to sit on the bench and come on when needed so i dont expect a to big of named striker to come threw the door!

KEOGH thanks for your performances in the championship. You would be the first to admit you have not improved in any department and continue to be a busy bee but that is all.
For the championship level that is ok,in the premiership you have to have CONTROL in most departments,Passin, shooting, positioning, first touch and the brain to find space and apply the FINISH.
At wolves we dont have this type of player completely,Fletcher shows intelligent movement will have to wait and see him a little more.Doyle needs to improve his SCORING for sure and also getting into the positions.SEB can score but does not have the other attributes to be a hugh success,I still however have hope as he is a natural scorer, and if continues to focus SEB may just become a regular.
SANTA CRUZ would be good signing if he can stay INJURY free.Only two seasons ago he was banging them in!We need proven ability, whether it be in the prem,la liga, couple of the nigerian strikers,MANCIENNE can stay at CHELSEA.

Whilst I can see the reasons for moving Keogh on (lets face it, he will never make a Premiership class forward), a move for Mancienne concerns me. In order for him to fit into the team, we would need to drop Jones or Doyle/Fletcher/Ebanks-Blake. I can only see Mancienne playing a bit part when we need to play 4-5-1 too get a draw.

My money is on Jason Roberts as he’s not been included in Big Sam’s 25 up at Blackburn, he’s a pretty much guaranteed 5-10 goals at this level and he’d be available for as little as £1m… a sensible, solid signing who would probably accept he wouldn’t be an automatic starter alongside our current three ‘preferred’ forwards.

As for cheering Milijas up, to be honest the only player who was more anonymous than Nenad last night was Dave Edwards – I only noticed he was playing when he got subbed off! As long as Dave Jones is fit I can’t see Milijas getting much of a look in, both him and Halford have got about as much pace as Eric Young had when he was with us!

With keogh going, we need another forward, as 3 forwards is not good enough in the premier league. If one is injured for any period of time, we will have no one to come off the bench to liven things up.

I would also pay to get mancienne to bloster the squad. Now to make space for 2 more players, I would send Ikeme out on load for the year, and look to have an under 21 goalkeeper, so as not to affect the 25 man squad.

Carrying 3 Goalkeepers over the age of 25 is a little too much, with this new rule, which leaves us a little bare elsewhere.

Hopefully the loan deal for Mancienne will go ahead. I’m sure there will be many games this season where we will revert to a 4-5-1 formation. In that system he will be invaluable.

Why’s everyone so against us buying Mancienne? It’s not like we’re broke… and he’s surely worthy of a place in the 25 with his versatility?

Agreed, we need another striker in the ranks, but why not both? Who else in the squad is a recognised DM apart from Karl Henry? Foley or Van Damme could probably fill in there but i see DM as Mancienne’s future spot. If Karl gets injured i’d be more than happy seeing Mancienne plug the gap medium term and possibly as Henry’s long term replacement. If Foley or VD were there i cud see them drifting to the right/left respectively. you can see when Mancienne’s on the pitch he’s always a few moves ahead… he’s a class act and just needs to perfect his execution. Don’t forget he’s only 22!

The people talking about Keane, Santa Cruz, Kezman are spouting drivel… Why unsettle three top strikers who are clearly extremely motivated and want to make an impact on the league? Caleb Folan will be perfect to warm the bench. He’s scored goals in the premier league and will fit in well. Oh yer, and he’s irish…

Caleb Folan? Shooting for the stars there, matey! In an injury pinch I’d be a lot happier with Kezman (454 career games, 231 career goals) than Folan (177 games, 28 goals). Well Done Wolves, Well Done Andy Keogh. This is a good move alround. He won’t get in at the moment his best chance was as a right winger whilst Hunt & Kightly are not fit. He will get games with Cardiff and success and regain his confidence as a player. The critics are right, he couldn’t finish for toffee but he had a great ethic, he never complained and he was a good link player particularly at Championship Level. I wish him well.

Mancienne, is now a squad player in the Wolves team IMHO. I think we is a great acquisation as he is less of a ris than N’Daw who is untried at this level an would take 6 months to settle. Loan deal – great!

Goalkeepers, personally I would sell Hennesey to Liverpool, Fulham or Arsenal if they want him, and keep Ikeme and let the Developement Keeper have an U21 role. I think that is the way forward, but I wouldn’t put Murray in the 25 thats for sure as he won’t be fit.

Finally I think we would be better buying one more right winger. I don’t know who, but if we are going to play 442 at home we need width. We need a real hard working up and down right winger. Thinking about it Eagles from Burnley is still the name that strikes me as the easiest fit. However, if he is unavailable I would keep looking at the likes of Babel from Liverpool or NZogbia from Wigan. They might be overpriced but I think we should be looking in that area.

Also Steven Taylor of Newcastle has been transfer listed today. He’s young, hungry and has a great future. I would be straight in for him.

Jason Roberts vs Caleb folan , I wouldn’t have either. How about taking Kevin Nolan from Newcastle or a loan move for Vela from Arsenal?

Well most people on here know i like Andy Keogh very much, ive always felt he’s a very underated player, who sees things happening before other players around him do. I also think he’s excellent at creating space, i know he doesn’t score enough goals, but there again not many players in teams like ours do?. Ive always thought he creates goals like he did for Billy Sharp, his best position is behind the front two, not as an out-out striker. Anyway good luck Andy and i hope it goes really well for you at Cardiff, at least you will already know most of their players. re-Mancienne i do agree with (13) im dont think he’s worth £5M-£6M , i wouldnt pay much more than £2M-£3M max, he wont ever take Karl Henry’s place thats for sure. I still think he’s lightweight/small and clumsy with his tackles, i would personally save the money and wait till January and see if/were we need cover and for what positions. Stearman can play as cover in the holding role quite easily and he’s a much stronger player in the tackle and can score the odd goal too. UTW

I think this could be a good move all round… Keogh has the chance to impress elsewhere so that we can try and get what the club value him at, although duly noted this would be over priced.

As for Mancienne, we are not willing to pay what Chelsea want, this may have something to do with the funds that are set aside for the new stand. But if he comes and we stay up again we may be more willing to sit down and negotiate a price that both clubs are happy with.

As for some of the names being mentioned on here (namely the Newcastle players) are you people a little deluded? Carroll is a hot prospect who is going to play us on the back of scoring a hat-trick against Villa…..Would we of looked to sell SEB had he done the same 2 games in last season?? Of course not and certainly not to one of our main rivals!! Steven Taylor would be good but the reason he isn’t staying there is because he has just turned down a new contract of £40,000 a week according to some reports and is looking for £60,000…. A little out of our price range I think?!?!
Then there is Kevin Nolan, a great player and i’m glad he is in my dream team but again is on way too much money, he may consider a pay-cut to play for a top 4 side but I highly doubt he would come here for what could be more than a 50% pay drop!!

Mancienne although over rated sometimes and also over priced at 5 million will be a great addition to a squad such as ours who are looking to consolidate it’s position in this league. As for a possible striker, we just need a bench warmer who, when push comes to shove, could do a job for us during injuries etc.

Vela, or a similar youngster may be a bit more realistic although most top prem teams may be looking to keep their quality u21′s with the new squad rules. I wouldn’t fall over with excitement with us signing someone like Folan but he would be the most likely fit in our current position.

    55. Most people give credit to Henry’s work rate.

    Limitations are

Limited in passing ability to find a Wolves player.

Plays too many sideways passes. playing many players into trouble

    Plays too many passes backwards.

Gives too many fouls away forward of our penalty area, then argues with the Ref

    Pulls shirts,wraps arms around players.

    Limited forward vision.

    Not Captain material.

I know he’s young and needs development, but we also have that kid from airbus that had a good pre-season and attrackted all the prem clubs and scored against Everton. I’m surprised he didn’t get half an hour last night.
Franco is also available on a free from West Ham who might be worth a punt as abackup striker.

Kezman is currently being linked to Partizan Belgrade and Bari. If they can afford him, so can we. It strikes me that he just wants to play. He doesn’t exactly sit in the same category as any of the other strikers you named.

Still, clearly, like most other people on here, you know something the rest of us don’t so I will bow to your greater wisdom and watch contentedly as you are proved right again and again and again…

    62. It’s not about greater wisdom or being proved right but just being realistic. I’m sure Kezman would be a great signing but knowing our club as we do it’s far more likely in our present circumstances that we’ll go for a striker of the Folan ilk rather than someone on far more money who I’m sure wouldn’t welcome warming the bench.

lots of good comments for a change. sad to see Keogh go, but having watched him many times high on effort and workrate but there is too little end product from him and I always thought he was shotshy. He would try to get the perfect angle to shoot when he had the ball in the box and at this and championship level you dont get that kind of time. Those who say hes better suited to the championship? he was hardly prolific in that league either. But the goal he scored against wigan last season was his most important becuase it gave us our first win and real belief we could stay up.
Good luck to Dave jones who i still fondly admire and respect. He is assembling a great squad at cardiff and they have a great chance of getting up this year.
as for mancienne, we need another defensive midfielder so he fits the bill, and possibly a target man centre forward in the drogba, carew mould, different to the strikers we have.

I think we need a target man centre forward, who is bustling and competitve in the air. I dont think caleb folan is good enough, when he couldnt get a game at hull. altidore gave our defenders a really tough time last season and carragher in the world cup, so why not him?

How many goals would he score if he played 90 mins in all 38 prem game this year or all 46 Championship games in years past.

Answer, NOT ENOUGH! i doubt he would hit double figures, so all this guff about reading the game and creating space for others. Don’t make me laugh.

    Clueless, absolute drivel!!!!

The majority of what you are describing is the job of a holding midfielder.

And barely gives the ball away, his job is to break up the opposition play & to give the ball to our attacking players.

EVERY team in this league has a Karl Henry, if he was foreign you would dribbling over him.

    Barry
    Macshcarano
    Essien
    Mikel
    Song
    Fletcher
    Petrov
    Huddlestone, etc, etc

The lad has barely put a foot wrong since he has been at the club.

Why should we sign a bench warmer? IMO sign another striker who is looking to steal the places off doyler, fletch or seb. Competition for every position is what we want, not someone who is collecting their pay packets and picking their nose on the bench. Mancienne is a must and IMO 5 mill is worth paying.

Makes good business sense as he is only 22 and can only see us making money should we ever come to sell him.

Agree about keepers, let Wales or ikeme go and use an U21.

Halford, Stearman, Big George, milijas all need to be looked at seriously if they are to be included in the 25 as I don’t think any of them are good enough at this level.

Henry = first name on sheet
    Ward = much improved
Mancienne = Henry eventual replacement and will be vital in 4-5-1.

Let’s sign someone who is going to properly compete for doylers place!

He’s only going out on loan. He could well be back next season. If he does well – we’ll want him back (not least as he’s reputedly MMs daughter’s boyfriend) as MM does like him as a player. If he doesnt do well, then Cardiff wont want him anyway.
Personally, I felt he was one of our better players at the start of last season. If he recaptured that form he would be an awesome player. But his current form is woeful.

What you say is right but totally out of proportion. The vast majority of Wolves fans know exactly what Andy Keogh has done for Wolves and wish him good luck in his loan spell with Cardiff.
This moron minority (look at 60) Flying Winger’s post for a first class example. Different player but a complete ignorance of what Karl Henry is doing for Wolves and indeed an understanding of the basics of the modern game)are an embarrassment to all clubs.
As you very well know you have similar set of DHs who have somehow mastered how to send an email.

In a civilised world, a player could leave the club with thanks for his service and best wishes for the future.
The only exceptions should be those whose behaviour really warrants jeers and abuse – Henri Camara, for example.
Andy Keogh is quite clearly a good lad who gave his all, and helped us get where we are today. He deserves our gratitude, and he should be made welcome whenever he returns.

Keogh shouldnt be in football but should be stuck in a field keeping the crows at bay.A sorry excuse for a player ,no talent and more importantly no mental strength…ward has received more criticism than keogh but doesnt churn out the cowardly displays keogh does …good riddance
