Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Sam Vokes joins Bristol City on loan
Thursday 5th August 2010, 2:00PM BST.
Bristol City today completed the loan signing of Wolves striker Sam Vokes.
The 20-year-old forward trained with his new team-mates today and has agreed a deal that will keep him at Ashton Gate until January 5.
Behind Republic of Ireland star Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher in the Molineux pecking order, Vokes has been sent to Bristol to gain further first-team experience and will go straight into City manager Steve Coppell’s squad to face Millwall on Saturday.
Vokes has made just four starts for the Premier League side, but has been used as a substitute 37 times, scoring eight goals in all competitions.
Capped 15 times by Wales, he has scored twice for his country and enjoyed a successful loan spell at Leeds last season.
Now the youngster has become the third Wolves striker to join City on loan this year after Chris Iwelumo and Stefan Maierhofer. The switch could also mean a reprieve for Andy Keogh.
Vokes said: “I definitely feel my time at Leeds added to my game and hopefully I can do the same again at Bristol City.
“At the time I went to Leeds I wasn’t playing any games but I went there and played 10 on the bounce so it was good for me.
“I was also playing a different role for the team so I’ve added that to my game since I’ve come back.
“Scoring goals is the main part of a striker’s game but I wanted to improve my all-round game and although I didn’t score many, any improvement to me as a player was welcome.
“I came back and I got into the team that played at Tranmere in the FA Cup and stayed in the squad for a good few months then. That was a big confidence boost for me.
“Hopefully I can do that this season and stay in and around the team as much as possible.”

Andy Keogh…Can he get me my lottery ticket this weekend? The cockroach that won’t go away.

Suprised by this as Vokes misses the photocall!! I thought Vokes would get a bit of a run out this year.
Means one of two things must happen – Keogh stays or he goes and we buy another striker!
Personally i would still get rid of Keogh as this means Mick will have to keep 2 players that he said he didn’t want! And we definatley need 4 strikers if we are to play 4-4-2 for an entire season!
Greg Halford is taking his game seriously now ad has impressed in pre-season, even Mick had to admit it. But Andy Keogh has only scored one goal, and that was against Cheltenham!
We were weak up front last year, and have sold three strikers and only brought one! I hope that this i some clever dealing on Mick’s part, like bringing in Vela or Welbeck!
Be very iteresting to see what happens!

This, along with offloading Hoff and Lumes can only mean one of three things, 1) We are signing another striker, 2) Keogh is the 4th choice or 3) maybe Ward will be utilised in the role we originally signed him for.
Or maybe even a 4th option, we have some wonder kid in the wings, whatever happened to Zele Ismail?

good luck sam,you will get a hatful of goals and you will come back a better player for the wolves .

Not really sure what I think about this.
Great to see him build his experience and confidence with City, but his age meant he would not be counted as part of the 25 squad requirement, hope there are no injuries to the strikers left and we’ve built in a recall option to the loan deal

Best of luck sam, bang them in and give Mick a selection headache !!

There is no doubt in my mind that Sam Vokes will eventually be a quality striker. To play under Steve Coppell at Bristol will be a good move.
Keogh could now stay but we probably require 5 forwards. The squad is extremely tight, if the likes of Halford and Keogh are staying.
Here are the over 21′s -
GK Hahnemann Hennessey Ikeme Murray
DF Zubar Halford Foley Stearman Berra Hill Craddock Mouyokolo Van Damme Elokobi Ward
MF Kightly Jarvis Hunt Henry Edwards Guediora Jones Milijas
F Doyle Fletcher SEB Keogh
If you discard Murray until fit, then Hill is the other definite omission. That leaves 25, so for anyone to come in someone would need to be loaned out eg Elokobi or Edwards.

Bristol City have to be a cracking e/w bet at 20/1 to win the championship this year. Coppell has done it before and with David James, Maynard, our own Vokesy and Nicky Hunt in a weak division I reckon they’re a good shout. Sorts out my Championship selection on the divisional accumulators:
Man Utd 5/2
Bristol City 20/1
Southampton 12/5
Morecambe 20/1

Mixed feelings. I think Vokes has great potential and would like to think he is our ‘big man’ option if we need to change it. However I am sure he will progress with Steve Coppell and be back in January a better player.
Hopefully it works out for him. Sadly I don’t think he will ever be good enough to play for Wolves in the Premier League! Top man though!
I know he is only 20 and will obviously improve. I have seen enough to say he will never be prem standard. Touch not good enough and too slow. Good luck to the lad and i hope he proves me wrong – but i doubt it.
Hope he does well while hes away, the only way he will improve is on loan as he will not get enough game time until he gets more experience.

7 Do you have to mention S ward everytime you come on this site.
HE IS NOT PREM QUALITY
Report abuse
MM does’nt keep deadwood so i think they see something in Vokesy for the future, hes only 20 and some develop late.I think he will become a good player for the Wolves and can only improve under steve coppell.
Keogh!! He is not a prem striker, this deal shoulda have been the other way round, keogh out, keep vokes he is still not top class and will always be a bit part player in the prem but he is better then keogh
Report abuse
keogh and ward should be sold as although they both run around [not unlike headless chickens] they are nowhere near good enough for the Prem. Ward gives 100% but looks lost at left back and Keogh just can’t shoot. I also think Keogh may have passed his goal threat ideas to Blake. It will be left to Doyle again to provide quality to keep us up
Report abuse
Hopefully he will improve by playing every week instead of warming the bench.
Could stike up a good partnership with Nicky Maynard.
Not sure that ultimately he will ever be good enough for the Premiership.
I too am unsure about this one. It will be good for the lad to play regularly, but he is a decent back up as an impact player. He had a good showing against Walsall.
All I’ll say is good luck Sam, bang them in and come back a better player for us in January.
We Are Wolves.
Good luck kiddo. Better than sitting on the bench and getting frustrated.
10 – How much would that accumulator bag someone if they stuck a quid on it?
Anyway. Yes, we need another striker. And why we’re not going after either Sidwell or Shorey is beyond me.
Dont worry sam you will be at the moll agen next season playing agenst um in the championship, aye boing boing
Report abuse
22 simple answer, MM will play S Ward no matter what or who we sign.
15) I forgot that you are the authority on football…not! Ward was mentioned as part of the squad. Now be a good boy and jog on to the Hawthorns!
I wonder if things would be different if Vokes had scored that ‘sitter’ against Man Utd. That might have prompted Mick to give him more opportunities and with the extra confidence maybe he would have scored a few and become established.
I think its a bad move. At Wolves he would be training with premiership players and learning from them. At Bristol he’ll just be playing with James and that’s it.
I wish the guy well but this is not a good way to get better.
Sir Terry, where did you learn to spell? “Agen”? “Agenst”? Shocking! Hang your head, sir!
