Andy Keogh earns Wolves friendly win at Cheltenham
Saturday 31st July 2010, 11:27AM BST.
Andy Keogh’s lone strike proved decisive as Steven Mouyokolo made his debut for Wolves in a game of chances galore at Whaddon Road.
Keogh’s winner was a sweet 20-yard strike in the 28th minute after he picked his spot as Mouyokolo came through 70 minutes.
But there was plenty to keep returning World Cup keeper Marcus Hahnemann busy. Nenad Milijaa, Geoffrey Mujangi-Bia and Sam Vokes all went close for Wolves before Academy scholar Brian McGroary teed up Keogh the winner.
Three minutes later, Milijaa almost got a second with a 30-yard volley that flew narrowly wide. Vokes twice went close, first seeing Cheltenham goalkeeper Daniel Lloyd-Weston drop his drive but the ball went behind for a corner rather than into the net, then he headed inches over from Scott Malone’s cross. But Lloyd-Weston atoned just after the break when he denied another Vokes header from Malone’s centre.
Hahnemann then took centre stage, first denying former Wolves reserve JJ Melligan at his near post. And although the keeper ‘lost’ a 20-yard shot from David Bird, Brian Smikle’s shot rolled along the line and hit the far post before Jake Lee’s effort deflected over. He also made a superb double save from former Molineux defender Keith Lowe. The American somehow managed to paw away Lowe’s initial header before tipping over his second effort.
