Surman’s departure to kickstart Wolves clearout

Andrew Surman

Andrew Surman’s £1.2m departure to Norwich is set to kickstart the summer sales at Wolves.

The 23-year-old midfielder sealed a three-year deal at Carrow Road last night as Wolves got their money back on the fee they paid Southampton last summer.

Wolves could still sign one or two more players before the season kicks off – Guirane N’Daw, the powerful Senegal holding midfielder, is the other main target on the radar with the club prepared to pay the £1.75m asking price.

And Aruna Dindane’s surprise revelation that his move to Qatar has not gone through has also alerted Wolves to his availability again, despite the £7m signing of Steven Fletcher.

But for now, and with around £17m spent on five signings, the focus has now switched to outgoings as the club look to balance the books.

And the club are looking for others to join £500,000 Chris Iwelumo, who joined Burnley, Surman and released trio George Friend, Daniel Jones and Mark Little through the exit door.

Wayne Hennessey, Greg Halford, Matt Hill, Stefan Maierhofer and Andy Keogh could be on their way.

It is understood Liverpool lodged a £2m bid for Hennessey before Rafael Benitez’s departure as they sought back-up for Pepe Reina, and the keeper is known to be unhappy at his exile from the team.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “We’ve got to work at getting some players out – we’ve got a few out and I’m sure we’ll get a few more out of the door.

“We’ve got January to think about and we can only play 25 players.

“We can supplement with Under-21 players, but I think Mick is very satisfied with the way the team is shaping up.”

Of the prospect of more signings, Moxey added: “We will maybe sign one more but there’s nothing guaranteed and there’s nothing really ‘live’ at the moment.”

As for Dindane, he said: Dindane not gone to Qatar:

“That’s news to us. We’ve signed Steven Fletcher so I think we’re satisfied with that.

“Dindane is a good player and we were very interested in him, so who knows?

“But he’s not on the immediate agenda for us, no.”

N’Daw, 26, joined St Etienne on a permanent basis at the end of the season as a condition of his season-long loan from Nantes when the former retained Ligue 1 status.

But it is understood they have bitten off more than they can chew and are struggling to keep him.

Wolves are monitoring the player’s situation in France and are prepared to firm up their interest.

And Wolves are still not ruling out the possibility of returning for Chelsea’s Michael Mancienne, who looks set to continue his long struggle for regular first team football if he remains at Stamford Bridge.

Of the names mentioned, i would loan out Hennessy, as i feel he could be an amazing keeper with more experience. Afterall, he a baby in goalkeeping terms, and has a long career ahead of him, the only way hes going to get decent experience is by sending him out on loan to get regular first team experience for a while. After a bit of experience, Hennessey could be an entirely different player and could get into the team a little easier.

I personally would add Ward to the list of departures, as last season he struggled at left back, and i would like to see both Van Damn and Elekobi both ahead of him for the left back role. I would also like to loan out a few of our younger players struggling for first team experience like, Stearman, Vokes and Hemmings, with the option to recall in case of any injuries.

Good deal to claw back what we paid for Surman considering he hasn’t played or impressed much at all.

1 thing I can say about Wolves since Mick became manager is the fact that at the end of every season he has recognised who isn’t working and gets rid.

Compared to managers of the past who had a tendency to sell our best players and hold on to our ageing under performing players. This really is the key to our recent success.

It’s interesting to see who’s in his 25 cos I’ve counted up and can’t seem to get dave Edwards in, personally I don’t think he’s good enough, look better with jones and guedioura in the team…..
    hennessey, hahnemann, ikeme
van damme, elokobi, Berra, craddock, stearman, zubar, mouyokolo, foley
jarvis, jones, henry, kightly, guedioura, milijas, hunt
    fletcher, Doyle, Blake, vokes

22 listed above, they’re on about 1 more signing & you’d have to say ward (mm’s mr versatile) & mujangi, wouldn’t have taken him on loan again if he weren’t gonna include him.
The others for the scrap heap I’d say, I agree with the other comments though loan the likes of stearman out, maybe kightly to get him match fit and register hennessey but loan him out if that’s allowed.

i wouldn’t sell hennessey buti would load him out to a championship side for a season.good luck to surman at norwich.didn’t think he wouldn’t cut it as a premiership player but he is a excellent chamionship player.please don’t sign didane as i think he is only after the money.

Overall, very happy with our transfer activity, no messing about straight in! Ideally, id like to get rid of Keogh, and bring another striker in.
Someone like O’Hara would be great too, but i really cant cant see that deal happening, maybe Kevin Prince? Worth a punt in my opinion. i don’t really know enough about N’Daw to pass comment, but for me, premiership experience is essential. Mancienne is a must for me as well, i hope that gets sorted out ASAP. Id let Stearmen go, don’t rate him at all, Mr Ward is versatile enough to warrant another season, and as for Elokobi… No where near good enough-nervous on the ball and cant really play football! Well thats my account of him!
Zubar and Foley fighting it out for right back will be an interesting scrap, though i do feel Zubar will edge it.
Jarvis was on the right way last season, he just got better and better and as for Kightly? Im not convinced-i hope to be proved wrong by the way!
    Fletcher and Doyle upfront? Dangerous!

I hope there’s a couple more deals to be done. Ideally Dindane and Mancienne, because I don’t know much about N’Daw despite his height and power. N’Daw could be another Olofinjana (looks the part, but rarely shows his potential).

I remember E&S reporting that Mick wanted both Dindane and Fletcher. It might have been an attempt to show off Fletch as the no.1 priority, and indeed he was quoted as saying he was a key target. But there’s definitely room for Dindane in the squad of 25. With his pace and ability to play down the right wing, he would complement the team very nicely.

There’s not much hope for Mancienne I reckon. Unless Chelsea buy a young British defender, he will be seen as backup for plenty of positions and fits the new design for the 25 players plus homegrown.

Next out of the Molineux door will be Keogh. He has his suitors in the Championship, and he won’t be featuring much next season for Wolves. Especially if there’s any developments in the Dindane chase.

must time mm just did not play them, hennessey
must stay when he lean to come out in his box
will be top class keeper.and dindane no thanks.and should keep stearman much better
    than berra can play football.

I think we should steer clear of Dindane

If he really wanted to be here, he would have turned up for his medical & signed.

Instead he has gone off to the world cup, hoped to have a blinder(which he hasnt, hes been awful) so he could tout himself around to the highest bidder.

We should leave him where he is, in limbo hopefully.

We dont need or want characters like him at our club.

Still think it could turn out to be a big mistake selling surman he wasnt given enough time or matches i thought he should have been loaned out for a season but least we got our money back and not made a loss like we usually do on these one season signings like darren ward and jason shackell think we should only sell hennessey if we get a £5 million plus offer also not that fussed if we get mancienne back i really dont think he’s that good a player he looked great in the pop league but in the premier looked like a little boy lost against the big powerful type forwards think we should sell dave edwards andy keogh greg halford matt hill stefan maierhoffer still do not get why we ever signed the last three but really happy with the new signings so far still would like us to sign o’hara or boateng though

I have to give credit to Moxey.

When we went up in the playoffs, the senior management team went on holiday and missed out on key players.

It looks like that lesson has been learned and we are getting in earlier.

    Good work.

I still feel we are missing something, and it would be a pity to see Mancienne go.

Don’t forget that Vokes will not count as one of the 25 as he is under 21.
Really we should bolster the squad with 1 or 2 quality under 21 signings, but I guess these will be at a premium due to the new rules.

Never saw enough of Surman to assess his potential. But good luck to the guy and he is still young enough to make an impact in football.

It’s difficult to read who is in Moxey’s mind as to the identity of the one more possible signing. Personally, I hope it’s Mancienne, but that depends on Chelsea.

Dindane,no.O`Hara,Mancienne,Yes.Hennesey needs to go on loan to a club who have a good goalkeeping coach,[which we don`t appear to have],and to get first team football. He has to learn to take control of his area and forget he plays for Wales.

Wolves have been terrific in the market in terms of getting players in early. How these players will do time will reveal.Hunt is the one player that as ?mark against his fitness ,on the other hand could possibly be the best of the bunch.
I am very happy overall at the way wolves is currently being run it seems a if all concerned with the club are on top of there game.

dindane, yes that would mean we would have 3 proven strikers at this level instead of only 2.and would also cover for injuries and loss of form. what if doyle had got injured last season, would we have stayed up?
Hennessey must fight for his place. There is no reason why he couldnt get back in the team or possibly go out on loan. For his career to develop there is no point him going to liverpool just to sit on the bench.
Agree with no 2 our centre midfield really needs strenghening too. there was a real lack of creativity there and few goal scored too. Edwards does not look a prem player to me, he’s full of running, but little else. Yes he gets in the box but his finishing is poor. If he could finish……
Ohara would be a good bet

Sign up Mancienne. We need a defensive midfielder and he will impove again this season and over the next few. I would pay up to £5M for him as i think theres a good chance he will be worth double in a few seasons time.

As fans we give loyalty to the team and we expect loyalty back fom them, so I am a little disappointed to hear such phrases as ‘shown the door’, ‘big mistake’, ‘ship out’,'scrapheap’ etc. I am sure Mick is more diplomatic in this respect, as he has often cited the opportunities for first team football elsewhere. Let’s be realistic by all means, but let’s give due thanks and wish the leavers well, that way the newcomers might feel more welcome and be more inclined to seve the club well that serves them well.

    3. One or two won’t count in the 25 due to their age.

Vokes, mujangi not sure about Hennassey

But plenty of room for edwards and I for one would welcome that. He’s the only central midfield player we have that has a great engine and he gets beyond the front one or two into advanced positions.

You need some variation and Milijas, Henry and the like aren’t going to give us that role. Remember Colin Cameron, he was great at those burst forward from deep positions.

no27 Spot on you need a runner in midfield and Edwards fits that bill.He also works his socks off.If only he could develop some composure in front of goal he will then become a really good midfielder. As you say Milijas and Jones are not likely to run behond the strikers but Edwards will.

if we are interested in another striker then why not kris boyd? hes a free transfer so worth a punt, if it doesnt work out sell him on for a couple of million and make our money back. if we do sell keogh and the hoff then were a bit lite going forward, so dindane and boyd would add depth. bit sad to see surman go, could have developed into a decent prem player but oh well, good luck to him at norwich.

Yes this is a sign of good things. Elokobi,Foley, Edwards and SEB goin would complete it as they are nowhere near good enough. Get kevin prince and keano is the main things as we have good enough cover for right and left backs now. Probs need another sriker so maybe get someone like Derdiyok from Bayern Leverkusen or Obasi from Hoffenheim. Someone who has pace and is a goal scorer. I think should start looking for players in abroad ie eastern europe or south america as this is what we need, quality.
