Stephen Hunt’s pledge to Kevin Doyle
Tuesday 22nd June 2010, 10:00AM BST.
New Wolves winger Stephen Hunt has vowed to get Kevin Doyle into double figures for goals next season.
Hunt’s £3m arrival from Hull on a three-year deal reunites the duo, who terrorised defences for four years at Reading.
Doyle was Wolves’ nine-goal top scorer in his first campaign at Molineux and, while the £6.5million striker won a stack of plaudits along the way for his overall contribution after leading the attack on his own for virtually half a season, Hunt is convinced he can create the chances to help his old friend eclipse last season’s tally.
He said: “If Doyle gets the right service, he’ll get into double figures. He’s strong and he played well up front on his own, when Wolves went to 4-5-1 during the second half of last season.
“He needs the service as well, so hopefully we can give it to him and for a few others such as Steven Fletcher, Andy Keogh and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake because I know he can score goals as well having played against him a few times.
“If we can provide the service for them, hopefully they can score goals.
“You’ve got to get the ball in the right areas for him and he’s got to make the right runs. We’re going to have a strong squad who I’m looking forward to working with.”
Hunt also revealed he would have left Hull even if they had avoided the drop, because of the Tigers’ £35million debts.
He said: “I think I would have moved on anyway for financial reasons, even if they would have stayed up, because of the club’s position.
“But I’m happy to be here now.”
