Wolves complete £3m deal for Stephen Hunt
Monday 21st June 2010, 10:30AM BST.
Wolves today unveiled their fourth new summer signing with the arrival of £3m Stephen Hunt from Hull – as they steppedup interest for a fifth.

The Ireland left winger has signed a three-year contract and joins £2.5m Jelle van Damme, £7m Steven Fletcher and £2.5m Steven Mouyokolo in Mick McCarthy’s reshaped squad.
And they may soon be joined by a fifth new boy after Wolves joined the bidding for powerful Nantes midfielder Guirane N’Daw.
Reports yesterday that the 26-year-old Senegal international had agreed a move to come to Wolves were dismissed as incorrect by chief executive Jez Moxey.
But N’Daw has been on Wolves’ radar for more than a year and the 6ft 3ins anchorman, who spent last season on loan at St Etienne, is expected to complete a £1.75m move imminently.
Hunt, meanwhile, was at Compton today undergoing treatment before a press conference at Molineux this afternoon as he continues his rehabilitation from a broken foot.
The former Reading wideman, who was Hull’s six-goal top scorer and Player of the Year last season despite not playing after February, is not expected to be fit until after the start of the new campaign.
But Wolves are satisfied the 22-capped international, who is known for his feisty style and long, flowing hair, will make a full recovery.
In four successful years at Reading, Hunt helped Steve Coppell’s side to the Championship title in 2005-06 with Marcus Hahnemann and Kevin Doyle and then had two seasons in the Premier League with the Royals, scooping the Player of the Year award in 2007-08, when they also went down.
Hunt’s signing ends a six-month chase by Wolves for his signature and the knockdown fee means the club have paid around £2m less than their final bid for him in January, while he becomes the oldest player boss Mick McCarthy has signed since Chris Iwelumo two years ago.
The two-footed winger, who is married to Doyle’s cousin, plays on the left and with pinpoint crossing and a goal threat, will be major competition for Matt Jarvis.
As Wolves welcomed Hunt, they prepared to bid farewell to another midfielder.
Andrew Surman was set to join Championship side Sheffield United as Wolves recouped the £1.2m they paid Southampton a year ago.
Surman made just three league starts for Wolves and nine appearances in total.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

Thought Albion were going to pinch him lol – great signing.

This is brilliant. Hunt is quick, direct, aggressive and has an eye for goal.
Now we’re cooking….
UP THE WOLVES!!!!
FANTASTIC NEWS!! another good signing. well done to all involved. COME ON YOU WOLVES!
I’ve never been completely sure about wether we should sign Stephen Hunt, but i’d prefer him to be with us than against us!
Perhaps Mick just likes the name Steve!
1. Stephen Fletcher
2. Stephen Mouyokolo
3. Stephen Hunt
and we all know he loves Stephen Ward!!!
My middle name is Stephen – i’m waiting for the offer Mick.
Pretty happy with deals so far – can’t help feel that we are still a bit lightweight in centre midfield if we are to play 4-4-2. Maybe this N’Gaw will fill a gap, but i’d still like to see Jamie O’Hara or Michael Mancienne and one more striker!
Marcus Hahnemaan (Wayne Hennessey)
Ronald Zubar (Kevin Foley)
Stephen Mouyokolo(Richard Stearman)
Christophe Berra (Jody Craddock)
Jelle Van Damme (George Elokobi)
Michael Kightly (Stephen Hunt)
Ardlene Guideora (Nenad Milias)
Karl Henry (David Edwards)
Matt Jarvis (Geoffrey Mujangi-Bia)
Stephen Fletcher (Sylvan Ebanks-Blake)
Kevin Doyle (Andy Keogh)
This is a decent team even without the liikes of Mancienne or O’Hara.
This still leaves players such as David Jones, Stephen Ward, Sam Vokes and a good crop of youngsters to help out the squad.
This should be a decent 25 players with plenty of home grown talent for the FA to smile about!
Players like Stefan Meirhoffer, Andrew Surman and Greg Halford will be sold. but if we get two more midfielders i think David Jones, Dave Edwards and Stephen Ward could also be saying goodbye!
Up the Wolves!

I’m loving this summer!! The Tesco Night Shift must be crying into their pasties…

Another quality signing..
Well done Jez and Mick..
Can’t wait for SirTerry(JEALOUS)baggies comments too…
Hilarious….

Really pleased how quickly were getting things done this year, its normally about a week before the season starts and were still wondering where our signings are coming from. Dont forget all this being done with Mick in South Africa too, so dont underestimate the work of Moxey etc. Just want the season to start now! WTID.
Is that the Wolves away kit he is wearing?
It looks tidy!
As reported…
Newcastle and West Brom were interested in signing Hunt who follows defender Steven Mouyokolo from Hull to Molineux to become Wolves fifth summer signing.
Hunt says…. i knew there was other interest but i always wanted to play for a big club..
And now he does.
Nice to see the club getting the signings done a bit quicker this summer.
Hopefully get Mancienne now and a I’ll be happy.

cannot WAIT until the new season
top job from the three mmm’s- getting all these signing in – with n’daw to follow in next couple of days- so quickly – all ready for preseason
we give moxey ALOT of stick and i am one of the worst – but huge pat on the back big guy – tremendous job !!!
very pleased with this. cant believe how quick we are making all these signings. Good to get them in for the pre season.
Will be interesting to see who is now shipped out.
COME ON WOLVES
Report abuse
Nice one wolves, not only have we signed a great player who will improve our attacking play. We have also signed someone that fits in well with our dressing room and has 3seasons worth of prem experience. Kites and Jarvo will now have to up there games as well.
Haven’t really seen much of Steven Mouyokolo, Is he any better than what we have already?
I think If we sign N’daw it’ll be so we can play 4-5-1. Because other than that I can’t see too much how he will fit into the team if we play 4-4-2, seeing as henry is likely to start most of the time. Plus it will mean that we have N’Daw, Henry, Jones, Milijas, Guediourra and Edwards(who I think should be sold) All trying to compete for 2 positions if we play 4-4-2.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES GET IN!!!!!!!! Enjoy your last 5 min slot on MOTD boggies, it won’t last.

Great signing. We are realy improving our squad unlike baggies who are just getting random players with no prem experiance. There going straight back down!
UTW!

I was dead against him signing in January, primarily because of his wages and the way Hull tried to screw us for too high a transfer fee. £3m – which is, I believe what we initially bid for him at the start of the year – the right figure, and he’s coming to a club being run in the right way as opposed to Hull, so it’s a fresh start for him.
Welcome to the Wolves Stephen Hunt, let’s hope you’re raring to go in September and you have a blinder of a season for us.
If he can tee up Doyle like he used to at Reading, and Fletcher & SEB as well, we could have a bit of a goal feast coming up at the Mol!
Kightly – if you’re ever going to get fit again, now’s the time to do it…
Report abuse
Excellent news, also i’m loving the black strip…
Signings at a decent price and improving the squad, its a marathon not a sprint and we are here for the long term….
Bet the baggies fans are loving us today…

Hunts signing is great news…
There is a definite purpose and confidence the way all the new signings are coming in and it bodes well. These are exciting times… UTW

good signing!,you cant knock moxey he is doing a grand job!

Wolves are looking strong. must get rid of a few now eg the hoff and hill and probably keogh to meet the new 25 squad ruling. we have plenty of good young players to supplement the core squad like malone batth mendez laing gorman etc. the tescos should be very worried as we are miles better equipped than them!

This is a great signing, really pleased to see us making some decent signings.
WE ARE WOLVES
Report abuse
I can see us fighting for that illustrious Champions League 4th spot this season.
Growing from strength to strength the MMM way.
We have to be chuffed with the signings we have made and that our style of down to earth hard working players will stand us in good stead in the long term. We have all seen what overpaid English primadonnas are like when they don’t have the luxury of foreign players in the league to make them look good.
Money is ruining the game and the FA seems to be run by idiots and our stars cannot perform on the world stage.
Thank goodness we have a club with managers who have sound sensible heads on their shoulders and players who want to die in a ditch for the shirt.
I can’t wait to get back to proper football at the Mol and lets all get behind our fantastic club. We won’t get it right all the time but we can see we are going in the right direction.
Serious well done to all concerned at landing all of MMs targets prior to the start of pre-season.
A very positive & decisive move by the club.
Bodes very well for the forth coming season.
Hunt is a great signing & it seems we have got him for the right money.
Get this Ngaw character sorted & it seems we are all done!!!

£15M well spent so far fellas!

Only time will tell if the signings we have made will enable us to move up to the next “mini league” in the EPL. However, I have to congratulate the club on the manner in which they have conducted their transfer business – very impressive!!!
Can’t wait for the new season to start, so that I can watch some real football rather than those over hyped bunch of supposedly fashionable football club types disgracing the England shirt!

a quality signing but i think we a proven premership striker, lets sign mancienne on a 4 year deal now. i agree with rich5wolves about getting excited about the new season,we could end up challenging for a european spot with a bit of luck, bring it on!
Why is everyone getting so excited????
The signings so far are all from clubs who were relegated, and players who obviously have the mentality of being relegated, Hunt twice already, get ready for the third!!!
Burnley and Hull were dreadful last season and it is easy for Hunt and Fletcher to look half decent amongst a load of dross. Come on guys and gals dont be so blind, talk about being fed a load of c$£% and coming back for more. No wonder Wolves fans are considered thick, the signings have been second rate with not a single one of them improving the squad, speak to Hull and Burnely fans, thats if they can get their words out from laughing so hard. £7million for Fletcher, OMG!!!! Now £3million for an injured player who has been relegated with Reading and Hull and is basically a put a shift in player.
Seriously how are you all getting excited over this???

We are now the 3rd best side in the west midlands, according to the league table. I believe we have improved our squad drastically but should not get carried away. I would still settle for 17th this season. And as much as everyone wants Albion to go down I hope all 4 w mods sides stay up so we can prove we are better year after year. It’s about time we beat them all now too!!!

I am impressed.Have been on this site before critcizing the clubs transfer dealings but we are really getting our act together this time.

Exciting isn’t it. The experienced premiership ‘pro’ we have desperately needed and now we have got plus £2000000 to spend on others.
Imagine Kites and Jarvis and Hunt- all in form – and competing for places.
So where oh where are the doubters now?
Where are those who decry the clubs ambition?

Great signing!! wanted him last summer cant wait for him to get started!
i have never liked jez but i respect the man for getting all these deals done why mick is at the world cup well done jez u deserve a thank you for once!
maybe one or two more signings wouldnt mind a striker becasue big chris has gone keogh looks set to leave vokes will go on loan and if blackpool want blakey mick might let him go but if we keep blakey that just leaves us with doyle fletch and blakey well if they get injured will be a massive blow and just be left with the 2 strikers so 1 more striker for me to make it to 4 then maybe a big center mid for example that N’Daw but i wouldnt mind going for that papa bouba diop when i went pompey away last game and they bought him on to be honest our midfield couldnt handle him cause of his size he is a big lad!
come on wolves top 10 next season!
Things are getting better and better for us. Fletcher, Hunt and Van damn (from set pieces) will definetly improve our goal ratio this season which was our main problem last season.
Keep in mind that a few of the players that struggled at the start of last season ie. Zubar, Berra, Jarvis, Henry, have all improved towards the end of the season and i have no doubts that they will start this season much better. Also Kightly will be like another new signing when fully fit, and we can only hope that Blake starts hitting the target again this season. I can see us finnishing in the top 10 this season.
Extremely pleased and excited to see Hunt. However slight doubt about his injury.
I really think this is a progression although the Premier league will be alot harder. I would still take survival from this campaign. Although I really think we can do more.
A good signing, but I still have reservations about his foot injury. Hopefully wolves medical team know what they are doing.
Have you noticed how Wolves seem to go through little phases of signing players from the same area or club. We had a phase where we were only interested in Irish players. Then it was Readings turn. We’ve signed 2 Belgium and 2 French. Now this is the second Hull player (and ex-Reading). As we have already signed Steven Fletcher, we must be lining up another Burnley player. Eagles perhaps?
amijustdaft? Yes! Do you think that had Wolves gone down it would have made Doyle less desirable? Of course not. Mick has said that wehave to strengthen the side with the best of the relegated stock and that is what we have done. It is up to the new boys to prove themselves and earn a starting place within the present squad. I am excited and I don’t care who knows
Report abuse
I would like to see Jerome Boateng come in half brother of kevin prince Boateng who is a defender in the german squad.
Just what is his foot injury. He has been out for a long time already? Can anyone throw any light on what the hell is the extent of his injury????
Great signing if he gets back to his old best.. :-)
The difference between this year and last year is clear.
Players will come to a side with a year in the prem under their belt, whereas they are far less likely to join when you are newly promoted.
I have no doubt we would have liked to have been this active last season, yet target players were not so willing to join us.
Well Well , were are ALL the knockers who where having a go at people like me who said we should ‘sign him’, even though he chose to stay ‘loyal’ to Hull. Now he’s signed everyones shouting what a good/great signing he is. How ‘Fickle’ some Wolves fans are. Just because he showed ‘LOYALTY’ to his Boss, his teamates and more importantly the’Supporters’ unlike many footballers today who are far to quick to leave a sinking ship i.e Henry Camara what a prat he was. So hopefully ALL Wolves will get behind him, it may take a month or two to get in his stride but what great competition we’ve got now for the two-wing spots. Plus who knows how bad Kightly’s injury is,and he’s still to prove himself in the PL yet?. UTW

My heads started to spin. You`re making me eat my words of the past Moxey but I don`t mind now that ambition is coming back.Get O`Hara and Mancienne along with Keane and I will travel every week from Spain to follow the team once again.UTW.

50. Andywolf, Jerome Boeteng has signed for Manchester City for 10 million quid plus
Hunt should be an excellent addition to the squad and hopefully we will be fit sooner rather than later. I still think a couple more players are needed, maybe another striker and it looks like the lad from Nantes is on his way.
UTW and lets aim for mid-table next season we can do it!!

Thought you would like to know that our good friend Henri Camara is now playing for Atromitos in the greek league.

50 – Andy hes signing for Mancity for 20million or in that region..
Well chuffed and Totally agree with 49 Batwolf.. the players we have signed are the few stars of the relegated clubs, so i dont get what the problem is if you wanted proven prem players such as the sidwells shoreys, beatties, curtis davis… they have to be on mega bucks and we can’t afford it.. rather buy the players we have got than go bankrupt !!

So pleased on all the signings so far, really really exciting for the new season ahead. As I’ve stated before, the 3 M’s are working this gently gently – what with the stadium plans too. This is a great signing as he is a very good player, and will hopefully get the best out of Kites and Jarvo to.

Really pleased with the signings BUT…
1) Lets not get carried away – with Newcastle coming up (and being managed properly) and west ham looking to improve their squad – SURVIVAL IS STILL THE AIM OF THE GAME ESPECIALLY AS WE WONT GET OUR NICE NEW STADIUM IF WE GO DOWN
2)We need a more creative player in centre midfield – sidwell would be amazing and not out of the question as we have all his old reading friends, but unlikely.
I also have to disagree with 5 – David Jones really should be given a lot more credit, especially compared to edwards, our revival after new year did not just coincide with 4-5-1 but also with DJ coming into the team and getting his fitness and game together. Jones and Milijas left feet gives a different angle of attack but jones is much better at tracking his runners.

yes another good signing, looks like N’daw will be in next.I still think we are all in for a ‘suprise’ signing as well,in other words someone who no one has thought of.Hopefully Mancienne may be allowed to leave Chelsea as well.We are the Wolves.
This is the best signing of the summer, he will bring the best out of Doyle and Fletcher. Don’t worry about the injury, they’re all part of a professional footballers career, most get over them and I’m sure the Wolves medical staff had him thoroughly MOT’d.
I confess I don’t know much about Mouyokolo, but the reaction from the Hull fans says a lot.
They are seething !
….. especially at the fee for such a quality youngster.
Don’t think Mancienne will be coming back, unfortunately, Chelsea will need him. That’s probably why we are looking at N’daw.
Love the bitterness and jealousy coming from the HawHawHawthorns (36) amijustdaft. What you say doesn’t make sense and you know it. Just because they were relegated doesn’t make all the players in a team bad footballers. Even the Baggies have Dorrans !
Don’t fret, they’ll be a few frees and loans available before the window shuts.

Many of you have given me stick in the past for being a happy clapper. I have always been a Mick Mack fan, and remain so. I have just a few small concerns for the season ahead though. These are:-
1. I hope that we widen the pitch again to give our wingers a chance to hurt other teams. (Of course this will also increase the chances of the top four or five hurting us, but that leaves 14 or 15 other teams we can hurt.)
2. I think that Hunt is a good player, but I am slightly concerned that he has not played since February, and may not be fit until October. Add that to the fact that he will then need five or six games to regain full match fitness, and we need to hope that Kightly is fit for the start of the season, or that Mujangi Bia is able to step up to the mark.
3. Many seem to be hoping that Robbie Keane is coming back. I have always liked Robbie Keane, but cannot help but feel that Robbie is not the player he was, and his best days are behind him.
I am very optimistic overall though, and expect to see us improve over last season’s points haul. My hope is that we will ensure survival much earleir this season.
Sir Terry Baggie we await your comments…… Anyway back to serious things. Ambrose would be brilliant but O’Hara would be good. N’Daw is quality check him out. We just need a creative midfielder now and yippee here we come. Baggies you will be looking up at us all season. You WILL be relegated.
This is fantastic news all round. It takes time for a football club to be shopping at harrods for players. They have to earn the right to be in the top flight, which wolves are doing one step at a time. Consolidation will still be Micks aim I believe this time next year. Improve the squad yet again to keep pushing up that table. In the meantime Wolves are investing in the squad correctly, with young and hungry acqisitions, who have a point to prove to themselves. After all we are our own biggest critics, Which Mick would probably be the first to admit. In Mick I trust and so we all should
Report abuse
No.79 waterside wolf, correct me if I’m wrong but MM never said we would not be bringing Hunt. He said “it was something that hadn’t been revisited at that point, and was injured at that moment” – as I said a week ago a typical MM bluff, listen to him carefully.
As for Robbie Keane he did say we wouldn’t sign him, and that is that. He is WELL OUTSIDE our wage structure, and personally I don’t think he is the player he once was, for the price that will be asked.
Be happy with what we are signing, and please stay realistic!!!
Yes brilliant, good player is Hunt and a great competitor – just keeping fingers crossed that he stays healthy but I think we have learned from the days of Daley, Froggatt, Thomas and De Wolf. O’Hara now and Mancienne = at least 12th place!
We have a quality squad of players and I strongly believe that Mick will change the formation according to the opposition with the players at his disposal now. I like 4-1-4-1 away from home at some of the more difficult sides but when we go to places like the Hawthorns we should play 4-4-2 and attack as we have better quality.

A cheap creative option would be the little Korean Lee Yung Chung, who plays for Bolton. He got us beat last season when he went around Adlene Guedeira on the bye-line to create their goal. He was Bolton’s most creative player and had a cracking game against us. He wouldnt cost much to buy or pay but would have the added bonus of selling us a lots of shirts in Korea as well as raising our International profile. He is a big name in Korea and may come with corporate deals. Think Samsung,LG,Hyundai et al.
Anyhow, I also like Chris Eagles and Prince Boateng but he’ll probably cost too much.

ReallY really excited about the new season to start and have to agree would love Ohara to come to us have we been linked with him at all? Consolidation again and start moving up table one season at a time.
COME ON WOLVES..

Agreed with….#25
The management and staff had done a better job to get Wolves up to speed for the next season with the signings.
It will give the players the extra time to gel. Will be a season for good anticipation of better results in the PL.
Up the Wolves….The future is brighter.
