The 27-year-old tweeted a photo of himself with Sinn Fein veteran Martin McGuinness alongside the words: "Reignition of the flames of reunification #BorderPoll #UnitedIreland."

Northern Ireland voted to remain in the European Union while the UK as a whole voted to leave. McGuinness, Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister, called for a poll on a united Ireland following the result.

Derry-born McClean, who comes from a nationalist background, played for Northern Ireland under-21s before declaring for the Republic of Ireland national team.

He is currently in France with Martin O'Neill's side for Euro 2016.
