The 26-year-old impressed last season alongside partner Michael Keane in the Championship, helping Sean Dyche's team clinch promotion thanks to a 22-game unbeaten run.

A former captain of an FA Youth Cup-winning Manchester City academy team, Mee played the majority of the campaign at centre-back but can also operate at left-back.

Although the Baggies haven't officially lodged an enquiry with Burnley because they have preferred targets ahead of Mee, he is on a list of potential defensive additions and the Clarets are aware of Albion's interest.

The club are hoping to bring in a left-back this summer with first-choice full-back Chris Brunt still recovering from a cruciate knee injury that ruled him out of Euro 2016.

The Northern Irishman is hoping to return in August but even if he was fit by the start of the season, Albion's former skipper is traditionally a midfielder.

Centre-back Jonny Evans had to fill in at left-back on several occasions last season because Tony Pulis is not a fan of the club's only recognised left-back Sebastien Pocognoli.

The Belgian still has one year left on his contract but the Baggies are looking for clubs to sell him to.

Albion would prefer to do early business in time for their pre-season tour to the Netherlands, which the club has no confirmed.

The Baggies will be contesting the FOX Sports Cup hosted by Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem between July 21-23.

Also playing in the tournament are Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven and Portuguese giants Porto but Albion are only scheduled to play the two teams from Holland.

They kick off the tournament in the GelreDome against hosts Vitesse at on Thursday, July 21, before facing PSV on Saturday, July 23.

"This tournament will pit us against some top European opposition and be a demanding test for the players," said Pulis.
