West Brom technical director Nick Hammond would 'love' to keep Saido Berahino at the club - as former suitors Tottenham close in on a different striker.

Spurs made four bids for Berahino last summer but now they are lined up to sign Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar for £12m, cooling their interest in the Baggies forward.

Although Hammond is still expecting to field bids from other clubs this summer, he's also keen to keep the 22-year-old at The Hawthorns.

"I've had conversations with him and have been very impressed with him as an individual," said Albion's technical director.

"I like him a lot and think he's a top player. I told him clearly I'd love him to be at the football club next season.

"He's a very talented individual, he's a good age, he's a home-grown academy player.

"He's the type of player I'd love to be here next year."

Berahino has one year left on his contract and it has long been accepted that the Baggies would finally sell him this summer after a difficult season under Tony Pulis.

Spurs, Stoke, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Watford have all been linked with the forward in the past.

But it's looking increasingly like a sideways move is the striker's only option after a season that yielded just four Premier League goals.

Hammond – who joined in April under a wide-ranging brief – said: "The chairman has been very clear in this, and I'm the same, if something happens it has to be right for everyone and that's it.

"There's an enormous amount of integrity at this club as to how we conduct business and that's really pleasing since I've come.

"Therefore, any deal, in or out, has to be right for the club and Saido knows that."
