Geoff Horsfield: West Brom are at their level

Great Escape hero Geoff Horsfield reckons West Brom will never replicate Leicester's title-winning campaign – but he does think the club is progressing.

The 42-year-old played for the Baggies when they were bouncing between divisions.

It was his goal and assist in 2005's famous final-day win over Portsmouth that miraculously kept the club in the Premier League.

This season, Albion are mathematically safe with two games remaining, and Horsfield thinks that's plenty to be proud of.

He said: "Leicester have just opened up the league and plucking Mahrez out of nowhere for £500,000 proves it can be done.

"Everyone's thinking 'if Leicester can do it then why can't we?' I know Tony and he's always been one of them who's solid, and got his formation.

"He's never going to play the flair players, he likes to work on set plays.

"He's done fantastically, but I don't think West Brom are going to ever break into the top six, they're never going to invest enough. They'll always be there in mid-table.

"The best they can hope for is to maintain their Premier League status and try and win the League Cup or the FA Cup.

"There's been progression and I know Leicester did it, but it's very rare. I can't see us looking at a team like Leicester doing it again."

Horsfield's sobering words echo the worries of Albion fans who have questioned the ambition of 40-point aficionado boss Tony Pulis and eager-to-sell club chairman Jeremy Peace.

The former striker, who's currently setting up a foundation to help house vulnerable adults, reckons Albion could break into the top 10 if Peace dips into his pocket this summer.

Horsfield said: "Tony Pulis will want to better his team. If he's got the backing they can strive forward but they're never going to challenge for the title."

Nigel Pearson was Bryan Robson's assistant at Albion when Horsfield played at the Hawthorns and the forward has fond memories of the former Foxes manager.

He thinks Pearson can be proud of what Leicester have achieved this season, adding: "If you look at that Leicester side, it's Pearson's.

"I thought he and Bryan Robson were a fantastic team, they were good cop, bad cop. Nigel knew when to put an arm around you and he knew when to give you a rollicking too.

"I bet he's sitting at home thinking Jesus Christ, my team's just won the league!"

Horsfield has recently taken part in the Fiat Tradesman Trials.

It saw the former builder pitted against ex-England U21 manager and former electrician Stuart Pearce, as well as former hod carrier turned Bradford and Hull striker Dean Windass in a series of DIY jobs.
