The Northern Irish centre-back narrowly beat his fellow former Manchester United star and current Baggies captain Darren Fletcher into second place.

Evans was presented the award in front of 300 members during a dinner at the Hawthorns last night.

Jonathan Leko was named young Player of the Year, Salomon Rondon was top scorer and Craig Gardner was awarded Goal of the Season for his long-range effort away at Chelsea in January.

John Homer, chairman of the supporters' club, said: "Jonny Evans is a very versatile player who, along with Darren Fhas bought that element of class from Manchester United where they've had a good upbringing.

"He can prove his worth in almost any defensive position and he also filled in for a spell in midfield which demonstrated entirely what a super footballer he is.

"It was reasonably close, there were a lot of people looking at Darren Fletcher who has also had a tremendous season.

"But I think it's the versatility from Evans that proved the clinching factor.

"Of course, he also scored a goal against Stoke and that gave us the first double over them for donkey's years so that, in itself, is worth a mention."

Laraine Astle, widow of club legend Jeff Astle, presented programme editor Dave Bowler with the Jeff Astle Memorial Trophy for services to the club over the past 12 months.

After the awards were handed out, supporters were treated to a celebration of the 1966 League Cup victory on the 50th anniversary of Albion lifting the trophy.

Fifteen players from the club's golden generation of the late 60s that reached four finals and one semi-final were in attendance. The awards were sponsored by Roger Edinborough of Sandwell Carpets.
