The forward, who will be part of the Baggies' squad that faces Arsenal tonight, has previously been a transfer target for Tottenham with Stoke boss Mark Hughes also a known admirer.

Berahino has endured a turbulent few years at the Hawthorns with a string of high-profile, off-the-field issues affecting his playing time.

But Pulis hopes, with those problems in the past, he can remain at Albion for the next few years.

The Baggies chief said: "I'd like him to sign a new contract. But whether we'll get that or not, we'll have to wait and see.

"I haven't spoken to anyone about it. That's just my personal opinion."

Albion chairman Jeremy Peace has previously rejected offers from Spurs for Berahino's services.

And when asked if he thinks Tottenham will make another move for the forward, Pulis said: "I don't know – I haven't got a clue.

"I wouldn't second guess anything, I don't think it's right for me to second guess, but I'm sure if they do then they'll get the same response from Jeremy.

"It's got to be the right deal. If it's the right deal for the football club, he'll speak to the board. He'll be the sole person who'll decide that."

Meanwhile, Pulis confirmed talks are ongoing with James Morrison over a new contract.

Albion recently agreed one-year extensions with Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson, but the head coach thinks they were always deals that would be wrapped up quickly.

Pulis said: "Gareth and Jonas were pretty easy deals to do so we've done them.

"They're two great characters, they've got the DNA of this football club through them and they'll be used in other ways if they're not playing as many games next year as they'd like.

"They're characters that can improve other areas of this football club. Morrison's talks are ongoing. I won't get involved.

"They're contracts the chairman and the financial situation at this club will dictate."
