West Brom captain Darren Fletcher insists there is no problem between the players and the fans despite the ugly scenes at the end of the FA Cup defeat at Reading.

Fletcher had to pull Chris Brunt away from a small section of the travelling support on Saturday, after he was hit near the eye with a 50p piece.

Anger at weeks of unsatisfactory performances boiled over in an unsavoury way, but the skipper is sure that the majority of fans are still behind the players.

He said: "One person doing that makes a story and it makes out that as if there is this big problem between the players and the fans, which there is not so let's put that to bed straight away.

"It is not a pleasant experience for anybody, to have a coin hit you from your own fans. You maybe expect from the away fans but definitely not from your own fans."

Brunt was understandably furious and started questioning his long-term future at the club, but his captain reckons the Northern Irishman will recover with the help of the thousands of fans who do support him.

Fletcher said: "Brunty is an experienced lad with a big character. He has been at this club for a long time and has been a fantastic servant and a great player.

"He has played well over 300 games which is fantastic and he is well respected in the dressing room.

"He will bounce back because the knows the majority, more than the majority of fans are behind the players."

After the game, boss Tony Pulis blamed the incident on social media and the lightning-quick way it can whip up negative feelings towards the club.

It was a sentiment echoed by 32-year-old Fletcher, who added: "Everyone has got an opinion now and bandwagons go a lot quicker, things happen and people are constantly commenting.

"Small things can sometimes escalate and get a lot of people behind it because of the power of social media.

"It's a new generation, it is something we have got to accept, it is not going away and we are going to have to deal with it. But ultimately there is a line and unfortunately that was crossed."
