Even though the 22-year-old is itching to play every minute of every game, his head coach doesn't think he's fit enough for the rigours of the Premier League.

Despite endless speculation during the transfer window, Berahino ended up staying at the Baggies and now Pulis is determined to get his striker up to scratch.

Pulis said: "I did a little bit of work with him on Thursday by myself after training and I'll be doing little bits with him, individual work.

"It's just to get him back to the sharpness that we need to start games and finish games.

"The problem we have now is trying to get him fit because he's had three or four months of not doing what he should have been doing in lots of respects.

"We need to get him really fit and up and running. Whether we'll get him to the level we got him last season, I'm not so sure, but it's been a massive distraction this season for everybody."

Berahino's three-month wait for a league start will continue at St James's Park today, where Pulis is expected to stick with Salomon Rondon up front after his late goal against Swansea.

Last season's top scorer will play in the FA Cup on Wednesday. Pulis said: "I'm not sure he'll start a Premier League game but he'll definitely play against Peterborough.

"He'll definitely get the 90 minutes there and then we'll look at what he's like after that, give him some game time against Everton.

"What I don't want to do is push the kid too hard and then all of a sudden he gets an injury, that's the last thing we need to do. Although he obviously wants to play now, every minute of every game."

Defender Jonny Evans has been ruled out for two weeks with his hamstring injury, while Chris Brunt is expected to be back for the trip to Everton next weekend.
