West Brom legend Tony Brown reckons Saido Berahino is 'wasting his career' - but others think head coach Tony Pulis is 'ruining' the young striker.

'Bomber' Brown wants Berahino – who scored for the Under-21s against Swansea last night – to train harder in order to force himself into the team.

Brown, who himself netted 279 times for the club, said: "He's got a great gift of scoring goals and there's not a lot of players that have got that ability.

"He's got it, we've all seen it, and while he's sitting on the bench he's not able to fulfil his potential and go on and score goals. He's ruining his own career."

Berahino has been on the bench for the last five games, and hasn't featured at all in the last three.

But Albion are on a four-match unbeaten run and don't appear to be missing last season's top scorer.

Brown said: "I don't know what's going on behind the scenes in training. But, when you're not in the side, you should go every day into training performing your best.

Albion's all-time record scorer doesn't think other clubs will be put off by Berahino's stint out of the starting line-up, though.

He said: "Everybody's looking for goalscorers at the moment and if you look at Saido from the outside, you probably look at what he did last season and he can score goals."

Not everyone agrees with Bomber. Former Newcastle, Coventry and Portsmouth striker Micky Quinn thinks Pulis' style of play is to blame for the striker's lack of form this season.

Quinn said: "Tony Pulis is anti-football. I've watched West Brom enough this season, no striker will score 20 goals playing for West Bromwich Albion.

"He's ruined Saido Berhaino, playing him as a right-sided midfielder."

Although Pulis played Berahino on the right this season, he didn't start him against Liverpool even though Stephane Sessegnon was ruled out.
