Boss Tony Pulis has revealed how defender Jonny Evans played through the pain barrier for Albion at West Ham.

The 27-year-old Northern Ireland international was a surprise inclusion on the team sheet with many at the club expecting him to miss out with a back injury.

But he solved a defensive headache for his head coach by putting in a solid display at left-back in place of the suspended Chris Brunt, as the Baggies came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw.

And Pulis later revealed how the former Manchester United man had made the team despite not training all week.

"On Saturday I would have said he wasn't going to play," said Pulis. "He's come along and played and picked the baton up.

"He had an injection in the bottom of his foot and he didn't react well and we really thought he was going to struggle to play.

"He's played with a lot of pain, but he's played exceptionally well and we're really really pleased with Jonny."

With Evans out wide, Pulis was able to pair Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson together in the centre.

And the head coach said: "He was absolutely magnificent at left-back. The kid is a top player.

"He can play anywhere across the back four, and I also think he could play as holding midfield player.

"His composure, his touch on the ball and his vision at times is first-class. He's played today with an injury.

"He hasn't trained all week, but he's played with an injury. We wanted to play someone out there who would look after Moses and someone who would have a bit of quality on the ball and I thought Jonny was fantastic for us."

Pulis was, on the whole, satisfied with a point after his team bounced back from a poor first half showing to claim a point at Upton Park, thanks to Winston Reid's own goal.

James Morrison and Salomon Rondon both had chances to put Albion ahead with Hammers keeper Adrian superbly denying the latter.

Pulis added: "The keeper has made a wonderful save off Salomon. If James McClean had been just a little bit calmer, he could've side-footed the ball."
