The Nottingham-born 23-year-old spent five years at Chesterfield before the Clarets snapped him up in the summer.

He was named Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Season at Chesterfield for the last campaign and has already made a big impression at Turf Moor.

A number of Premier League clubs are believed to be keeping tabs on the tall defender, of Zimbabwean descent.

Darikwa can play right-back or midfield and, at 6ft 2in, he fits the mould preferred by Albion boss Tony Pulis.

The head coach likes versatile players and has spoken about the need to sign full-backs and midfielders in January.

He said: "We need a little bit more down the sides of the pitch, as I've stated right from the beginning. A little bit more most probably in midfield.

"We certainly need a full-back that can give us the quality that we want and put in the effort and commitment that the lads put in, at this moment."

If Pulis is interested in Darikwa he may have to beat off some competition for his signature, as Premier League leaders Leicester City are also reportedly looking at him.

Burnley are currently fifth in the Championship, just two points off Hull City in top spot as they look for an immediate return to the top flight.

Whether the club will be willing to sell a player they only signed in the summer is another matter.

These latest rumours follow news that Albion were looking at another possible midfield addition for the January transfer window in League Two.

York City midfielder Ben Godfrey has caught the eye of several clubs and the 17-year-old has already broken through to the Minstermen's first-team.

Albion reportedly sent a scout to watch York's league match at home to Plymouth recently, where Godfrey was on target in a 2-1 defeat.

Like Darikwa, Godfrey can also play in midfield or defence. Both Hull and Cardiff are also believed to be interested in the teenage talent, but Albion do have connections at York.

Former midfielder Jonathan Greening is a player-coach at Bootham Crescent. As December nears, the transfer rumour-mill is starting to gear up into overdrive.

Albion are interested in doing a lot of business in January but much of it could rest on the future of Saido Berahino.

Manchester United are the latest club to be linked with the 22-year-old striker, who hasn't started either of the last two games. Newcastle, Chelsea, and Tottenham are also watching.
