Tony Pulis is set to ring the changes against Port Vale tonight – but the Albion boss insists he is "desperate" to progress in the Capital One Cup.

Pulis will call up players from the fringes of his squad as his side go into second-round action just two days after facing Chelsea in the Premier League.

But he says the Baggies will be going out to win the first leg of this week's Potteries double-header.

Pulis opted for a Tuesday cup tie to allow maximum preparation time for Saturday's trip to Stoke – his first return to his former club as an opposition manager.

"It's difficult and it is early in the season but we will be trying to put a team out that will win and have a go," said Pulis.

"That's what we'll try to do.

"I will have a good look at them and we will go from there.

"Whether we played it on the Tuesday or the Wednesday we knew it was going to be a difficult game.

"The players should be OK. They're fit enough now and capable of doing this, whichever way we did it.

"I'm desperate to win the game."

Winger Callum McManaman is hoping for another run-out at The Hawthorns after his eye-catching display in Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Chelsea.

The Scouser said: "I think we played really well and matched Chelsea.

"It's pleasing to know we played so well against the champions.

"We caused them plenty of problems before and after the red card (for John Terry).

"I think we gave them too much of a head start.

"If you let in three goals in any game it's going to cost you points but you just can't do that against Chelsea, it's killed us in the first half.

Callum McManaman of West Bromwich Albion.

"We shut up shop in the second half and defended better as a team. We looked really dangerous going forward.

"I'm feeling very good at the moment. I feel fit and sharp, which is pleasing considering I missed parts of last season through injury.

"I was obviously disappointed not to start the first two games but I was happy to play.

"I was happy with my performance and hopefully with a run in the side now, I will be able to keep that level up.

"The squad is gelling together really well. I think once we have got ourselves sorted defensively as a team that will help massively.

"We showed that we are good on the attack so there is plenty to look forward to.

"The new players have come in and settled really well which is obviously great for us. I think once we find our first win, we will go on a run and win a few games.

"We showed on Sunday that we can compete with the better teams in this league and that gives us plenty of confidence. We obviously want to get points on the board as quickly as we can."

Pulis could hand a first start to loan signing Serge Gnabry against Vale tonight after the young Arsenal winger made his debut as a substitute against Chelsea.

Another summer signing, Rickie Lambert, could get the chance to improve his match fitness while James Chester, who also signed in the close season, looks likely to figure along with Sebastien Pocognoli.
