Albion issued a statement confirming the request in the wake of Tottenham's failed bid of £15million last week.

The Baggies statement read: "West Bromwich Albion have received a written transfer request from Saido Berahino.

"The request has been rejected and the club's position remains unchanged from that outlined in the statement from chairman Jeremy Peace of August 18. There will be no further comment."

Spurs are expected to return with an improved offer for the former England Under-21 hitman, who was left out by head coach Tony Pulis for yesterday's 3-2 Hawthorns defeat by Chelsea.

But Albion are thought to be holding out for a minimum of £25m for the Burundi-born goalscorer, who is the brightest star to emerge from their academy.

Meanwhile, another Albion youngster left the club today when midfielder Liam O'Neil joined Chesterfield.

He made a permanent move for an undisclosed fee.
