Boss Tony Pulis believes club-record signing Salomon Rondon can be West Brom's answer to former transfer target Demba Ba.

He reckons Rondon, who could make his Baggies debut at Watford tomorrow, can play a similar role to Ba, who turned down Pulis this summer in favour of a big-money move to China.

Albion turned their attentions to Rondon, after Ba rejected a return to the Premier League and signed for Shanghai Shenhua from Turkish club Besiktas.

And Pulis reckons 25-year-old Rondon, who cost an initial £12million when he moved from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, shares many of the traits of the former West Ham, Newcastle and Chelsea man.

The Baggies boss, who also tried to take Ba to Stoke, said: "We've been impressed with Solomon. In the modern game, he reminds me a lot of Demba.

"He's quick and strong and strong, he wants to score goals, he's that type. But he has the willingness to try and get behind defences."

Meanwhile, Pulis has reiterated that Rondon's arrival does not mean the Baggies plan to sell Saido Berahino despite ongoing speculation linking the star youngster with a move to Tottenham.

The Baggies boss confirmed Albion had received no inquiries about the 22-year-old and, asked whether Rondon's signing had implications for Berahino. Pulis said: "No, not at all."
