And the Hawthorns chief is determined to add to his ranks in the remaining two weeks before his team's top flight curtain-raiser against Manchester City on August 10.

So far Albion have made just one summer capture, bringing in midfielder James McClean from Wigan Athletic.

Several more names have been linked but Pulis acknowledges that it is not just supporters who will expect to see new faces coming through the doors in the coming days.

He said: "We need to bring players in. I think the dressing room is waiting for players to come in.

But we are working hard behind the scenes.

"There is a whole host of players out there, but it is not about just signing any players. It is about signing good players."

Pulis' second summer capture of the season could well be former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby.

The Albion head coach said: "We've made him an offer. Whether he accepts that and the ethos of the football club we'll wait and see."

Pulis, who saw his team beat Swindon Town 4-1 in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, acknowledged that his team needs to improve in all areas, especially up front.

And the boss defended new-boy McClean following a late tackle in the first half of the game at the County Ground, saying: "It was a poor challenge, I don't think McClean meant it. It was a forward tackling back, it was mis-timed and it just went from there."

Meanwhile, the club has vehemently denied a national newspaper report that striker Saido Berahino was on the verge of completing a £15m move to Spurs within 48 hours.
