Albion are pressing ahead with talks which could see former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby become their second summer signing.

Boss Tony Pulis has held discussions with the 29-year-old, who is a free agent following his release by the Gunners in May.

Diaby, who has a long history of injury problems, will undergo a medical but the club are hopeful that all being well a deal can be completed quickly.

The Paris-born midfielder joined Arsenal for £2million from Auxerre in 2006 and went on to make 180 appearances, though just 25 of those came in the past four seasons as he suffered continuing misfortune with injury.

Albion's medical staff remain confident, however, they will be able to get him fit and provide Pulis' team with a valuable asset.

Any deal would be similar to the one offered by the Baggies to Owen Hargreaves four years ago, when the similarly injury-afflicted former England international became a free agent.

Pulis is becoming ever more eager to add to his ranks, with James McClean the only acquisition of the summer to date.

While the club are confident of signing Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert, the deal will not be concluded until next week when the 33-year-old returns from the Reds' pre-season tour of Australia.
