Gardner's strike in the important 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park on April 18 topped the club's Facebook poll with more than 40 per cent of the vote.

The 28-year-old's strike in the 53rd minute not only sealed a 2-0 success but was his second in as many games and back-to-back victories for Albion.

Striker Adil Nabi was named Young Player of the Season, after a consistent goalscoring campaign which took him to the brink of a first-team call.

The club have taken up their option on the 21-year-old, who will return for pre-season training determined to prove to boss Tony Pulis he is ready for a senior berth.

Rising 17-year-old defender Jack Fitzwater was selected as the academy player of the year.

Fitzwater is another of the Under-18s squad to have revelled in playing Under-21 football, as more senior figures such as Liam O'Neil and Donervorn Daniels have been loaned out.

Fitzwater said: "I'm delighted with the award and I owe a lot to all the coaches who have put so much effort into developing me."

Both the Young Player of the Season and the Academy Player of the Yvear awards were selected by the coaches who know them best.
