The Baggies had to send material from the former Hawthorns pub, on the corner of Halfords Lane and Birmingham Road, for testing after discovering horse hair during a demolition.

But the tests have come back clear and work on refurbishing the historic building is continuing.

The club have demolished the 'wings' of the pub to leave only the original 19th Century listed building, which will form the centre-piece of the next fanzone, which is due to open next season.

But at the latest meeting of the 'Albion Assembly', head of facility operations and development Mark Miles revealed a delay caused by an unexpected discovery.

He said: "As we started to demolish we found horse hair in plaster so we then had to send that off for testing, as horse hair can contain anthrax pores."

However, the club confirmed today that the discovery took place some time ago and all tests had returned clear results.
