The Baggies and the Reds played out an underwhelming contest that only truly came to life during 15-minute spell in the second half.

That period saw the visitors hit the bar and both sides have a goalbound effort cleared off the line.

Albion had the game's first chance as Craig Dawson headed down a Chris Brunt free-kick and Craig Gardner's shot was turned towards goal by Victor Anichebe.

But his effort crept just wide.

Raheem Sterling escaped a yellow card for a deliberate handball as a crossfield pass headed into touch, then Liverpool had a chance to test Boaz Myhill in the home goal when Saido Berahino fouled Mario Balotelli on the edge of the area.

Steven Gerrard took the free-kick but bent his effort fractionally over the bar.

Phillipe Coutinho tried his luck with an ambitious effort from just outside the centre circle after spotting Myhill off his line, but the effort went well wide.

Finally the game came to life around the hour mark when Dawson sent a glancing header just wide from a Gardner free-kick and Liverpool had multiple chances to score in a frantic goalmouth scramble.

Myhill saved well from Coutinho and Joleon Lescott cleared brilliantly off the line from Jordan Henderson.

Albion then broke through Chris Brunt, whose superb left-wing cross was met at the far post by Gardner but blasted into the side-netting.

Then Liverpool rattled the crossbar through Jordan Ibe, who cut into the penalty area and hit a shot that deflected off Lescott onto the woodwork.

Albion should have scored when a superb cross from substitute Callum McManaman found the head of James Morrison, whose effort was scrambled off the line brilliantly by Dejan Lovren.

Liverpool did some pressing late on but a tame shot by Gerrard was saved by Myhill.

And a 20-yard volley from Coutinho dipped onto the roof of the net.

The biggest plus for Albion was a bright cameo for substitute Callum McManaman who, after going on several mazy runs, had a cross-shot saved at the near post by Simon Mignolet.

In stoppage time, Lovren headed wide from a Gerrard cross.
