Gardner struck his second goal in as many games in Saturday's 2-0 win at Crystal Palace with his spectacular, long-range effort helping Tony Pulis's men reach 36 points.

But Kemp believes the former Villa and Birmingham man should have more than his three goals this season.

He said: "It was a great strike, I don't know why he doesn't do it every week. Craig's got that about him, he's got a great strike on him.

"Hopefully, that gives him confidence and we'll see it more in the future. You can see why he's scored so many goals in the Premier League, he's got that ability.

"Hopefully this gives him the confidence to score a few more for us. He always works on his finishing. It's like anything – you have to take it into matches and do it on the day.

"He's scored in the last two games and we'd like to see more of it."

The Baggies are now eight points clear of the Premier League drop-zone, but Kemp has echoed boss Pulis' call for the club to push for 40 points despite their nightmare run-in.

He said: "I'd certainly like us to get past 40 points. I think if we got to 40 points that would be a good achievement this season, considering where we were when we came in and the situation the club was in.

"I think if we can get to 40 points. We'll be quite satisfied with the performance this season. If we get to 40 points, let's see where that puts us in the table.

"When we came in, if you'd have said to get to 40 points that would have been a good tally. That could get you 13th or it could get you 16th or something like that.

"You have to look at the once the season is over. We just want to make sure we stay in the Premier League this year and start setting goals for next year."
