Myhill is set for an extended run as first-choice after Foster underwent surgery on a cruciate ligament injury.

Foster, who was originally diagnosed with cartilage damage, had surgery on Friday then saw understudy Myhill pull off a string of fine saves in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.

Myhill said: "We're all gutted for Ben. We wish him the best with his recovery and as usual I will try to do my best while he's out.

"I'm always a self-confident guy and I will take it one game at a time.

"Everybody feels better when they've had a run of games but I'm ready and I've been ready as and when needed since I've been at the club.

"We're all gutted for Ben and we hope he gets back as soon as possible but until then I will try to do my best."

Foster limped off in the second half of last weekend's home win against Stoke and initial tests suggested cartilage damage, with the England man ruled out for at least a month.

But during Friday's surgery specialists found more serious damage and operated immediately to correct the problem, putting him on the sidelines until around October.

Dr Mark Gillett, Albion's director of performance, said: "Ben is in good spirits, despite this obvious disappointment to him.

"He's already talking about his 'rehab' and wanting to get started on it immediately.

"But he has had a cruciate reconstruction of his left knee following the injury against Stoke and he will be out for six months."

Myhill put in a Man of the Match display to prevent a heavier defeat against City, but played down his own performance.

He said: "To be honest, I was more pleased with the way everybody stuck to their task.

"It tells you a lot about a football club how people react when they're down and we look like a solid football club.

"We restricted them to not a ridiculous amount of chances and they're a great team when you've got everybody on the pitch so the club gave a good account of itself.

"We dealt with the setback and dug in."
