The real Neil Lennon could have taken heed - a prank played on West Brom boss Tony Pulis now rings true after Paddy McCarthy joins Bolton from Crystal Palace.

moreFootage of joker Harry McLaughlin speaking to the Baggies head coach on a mobile phone has been a smash hit online.

Pulis responded to a voice-mail from the prankster and returned his call in the mistaken belief it was Trotters chief Lennon.

The caller, speaking in a accent similar to that of the former Northern Ireland international, called Pulis on the pretense of checking on defender Gareth McAuley.

Pulis told the imitator that McAuley was not for sale but, ever-willing to help, recommended McCarthy, a centre half who played under him at Crystal Palace, instead.

A spokesperson for West Brom confirmed it was the real Pulis who was duped by the phone call. They added: "We are aware of it."

But now Lennon has made some of it come to pass by taking McCarthy on loan for the rest of the campaign - on, you could argue, Pulis' advice!

Even the official West Brom account saw the funny side when the news broke today, putting out the following tweet: -
