Graham Dorrans had a ninth-minute penalty saved as Albion claimed a point from a turgid game at the KC Stadium.more

Hull keeper Alan McGregor stopped Dorrans' spot-kick after Victor Anichebe had been felled by Jake Livermore.

That came as regular penalty-taker and leading scorer Saido Berahino sat on the bench – dropped by under-fire boss Alan Irvine after a series of poor performances.

There was more criticism from fans for the Scot but his side defended well for their clean sheet with Gareth McAuley recalled at the heart of defence and helping end a run of four straight defeats.

However, their lack of creativity and goal power remains a major concern.

Albion suffered an early scare when a cross by David Meyler was hooked clear by Andre Wisdom with Abel Hernandez waiting to pounce.

But the Baggies had already had one penalty appeal turned down for a tug by Michael Dawson on Victor Anichebe when the big striker went down again and was awarded a spot-kick.

There seemed no doubt the second time as he was pulled to ground by David Livermore and referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot.

But with regular penalty taker Berahino on the bench, Dorrans stepped up to take responsibility and his poor effort was saved by Alan McGregor, tumbling low to his left.

The remainder of the first half was a turgid affair, although there was the glimmer of a chance for Hull when Hernandez headed wide from a cross by Ahmed Elmohamady.

With Albion lacking any pace or width and the Tigers wasteful in possession, it was a turgid spectacle for the opening 45 minutes.

The second half was no more entertaining and the Baggies could have found themselves behind early on when Sone Aluko dragged a shot just wide and Ben Foster made a smart save to keep out a header from Stephen Quinn.

But Albion had a near miss of their own when Craig Gardner won and took a 20-yard free-kick that was flying into the top corner before McGregor made a fine save.

Hernandez had another chance for the hosts when he met a Robbie Brady free-kick and headed just wide.

During a dull second half there was more criticism for Irvine, with ironic cheers greeting the arrival of substitute Silvestre Varela before boos when travelling fans realised Stephane Sessegnon was being replaced.
