The Baggies trailed 2-0 at the break after Brede Hangeland and Mile Jedinak, from the spot, seemed to have Palace cruising.

But substitute Victor Anichebe pulled one back when he headed home his first of the season.

Berahino then salvaged a point when he beat Wayne Hennessey from the spot in the third minute of stoppage time, after Anichebe had been fouled.

Former Wolves shot-stopper Hennessey was in goal after coming on for Palace No 1 Julian Speroni, who was injured as Anichebe netted Albion's first.

The treatment for his head injury led to six minutes stoppage time being played at the end of the game and it was during that period Albion got their leveller.

Albion made just one change from the team which drew 2-2 with Manchester United last Monday, with the fit-again Ben Foster replacing Boaz Myhill in goal.

It was a tentative start from the hosts with Palace's Yannick Bolasie causing mischief down the left.

The winger almost got a clear chance in the opening five minutes but saw his effort blocked by Craig Gardner and he then sent another strike from distance just wide of the near post.

Wilfried Zaha was causing trouble too and played an indirect part in Palace's opener, winning a free-kick on the edge of the box after being tripped by Sebastien Pocognoli.

Frazier Campbell's looping header was tipped over by Foster but, from the resulting corner, Hangeland forced the ball home at the second attempt on the volley, after his first header had hit Craig Dawson.

Gardner sought to rally the hosts with a first-time left-footed drive which Speroni was forced to tip over.

From the corner, Graham Dorrans had an opportunity to force the ball home but fired over from eight yards.

Palace came close to adding a second when Campbell was inches away from converting Bolasie's teasing cross, after the impressive Marouane Chamakh had robbed Wisdom of the ball in midfield to set up a swift counter.

After an opening half hour to forget, Albion finally began to up their game and skipper Chris Brunt was inches away from a level when his in-swinging cross was inches away from creeping inside the far post.

The visitors might have had a penalty when Dawson escaped censure after appearing to trip Zaha, but it only delayed the pain for the hosts.

A minute into stoppage time, Pocognoli brought down Bolasie and Mark Clattenburg pointed to the spot.

Jedinak sent Foster the wrong way from the spot to double Palace's lead and leave Albion with work to do in the second half.

They began it six minutes into the second period. First Berahino's curling shot was tipped round the post by Speroni and, from Brunt's resulting corner, Anichebe headed home.

Palace cried foul, claiming Speroni had been fouled by Craig Dawson at the set piece.

In scenes which can only be described as farcical, the goalkeeper then at first refused to go off after lengthy treatment but was eventually replaced by Hennessey.

Buoyed by his first goal of the season, Anichebe then drilled an effort across the face of goal before Dorrans thumped a shot just off target from distance.

Gardner went closer, striking the bar with a right-footed drive from 30 yards out with Hennessey well beaten.

The chances kept coming, Morrison's first time strike from Pocognoli's cross was blocked by Hangeland and Berahino then fired the loose ball over. The latter also sliced wide after Anichebe had caused further problems in the visiting defence.

For all Albion's pressure, it looked like Palace had held out until the third minute of stoppage time.

Anichebe was tripped by Jedinak as he shaped to shoot and Berahino beat Hennessey with a penalty into the bottom corner.
