Joleon Lescott today declared his winning West Brom debut “extra special” as he hailed their tactical success at Tottenham. The England international produced a man-of-the-match performance in his first competitive appearance for the Baggies in yesterday’s 1-0 win at Spurs.

Albion’s first victory of the season lifted out of the relegation zone up to fifth from bottom.

And Lescott was full of praise for the way Albion’s gameplan worked as James Morrison’s 74th-minute header clinched their first win at White Hart Lane for 30 years.

“It was nice to play and perform like that, the way we did as a team, and then to get the win was extra special. It was a massive result,” said the 32-year-old former Wolves defender.

“I think it was a very well-organised and disciplined performance by the team.

“The manager worked hard and we all worked hard all week implementing what he wanted us to do on the training pitch and it all worked out.

“They probably had more possession but on chances created, we matched them and with the quality that Chris Brunt and James Morrison put in from our set-pieces, we knew if people could get on the end of them we could cause problems.”

Albion conceded in the first two minutes against Swansesa and Everton and Lescott revealed that keeping Spurs quiet for as long possible was at the heart of their gameplan.

“After some negative results our job as a team was to keep a clean sheet and be disciplined,” said Lescott, who replaced Jonas Olsson.

“We were happy there weren’t any early goals given away and we were just determined to keep that going because we knew the second half would be just as difficult.

“We knew if we could continue to progress and push forwards we could get something out of it.”

Lescott was even close to a debut goal after his hooked effort his defensive team-mate Craig Dawson.

“I got a bit of stick about that! I don’t think I have caught many sweeter than that to be honest,” he said.

“It was either going in the top corner or the top of the stand but it was just unfortunate that Craig Dawson was in the way.”

Lescott has played in Premier League deciders, an FA Cup final, internationals and Champions League games.

Yet he admitted he has rarely felt the anticipation than he felt playing for Albion for the first time.

“I’ve been itching to play,” said Lescott. “Beforehand it was probably one of the most excited I have been before any game.”
