Berahino bagged his ninth goal in the qualifying campaign for the under-21s European Championships next year to move joint third in the scoring list.

Just former England captain Alan Shearer and former Everton and Arsenal marksman Francis Jeffers are ahead of the Baggies hot-shot.

He scored twice in a 3-0 win in Moldova on Tuesday to keep Gareth Southgate's side top of group one with nine wins from 10 games.

Berahino has netted nine times in eight games to move within four goals of Shearer and Jeffers but he said: "It's nice to hear about my record this season and hopefully I can break the total one day, but I just thank god that I've contributed to the team.

"You could see that, even though there were a few changes to the team, everyone stepped in and did their job.

"It just shows how strong we are as a group, we all gelled together and we all play together and understand each other well.

"The group is getting stronger and stronger as games are going by, so it was important that we got the victory and now we can kick on and go into the play-offs with confidence."

After playing as a central striker in Friday's win over Lithuania, Berahino was switched to a wide role in Moldova with Tottenham's Harry Kane leading the line.

Berahino said: "I've played on the left before for my club and I've played on the right, so I'm lucky enough that I can play on either side of the striker and up front if I'm required.

"It was about going out there and doing what's required for the team and I was happy to get on the scoresheet.

"I was actually disappointed with myself because I thought I had good chances, especially in the second half, to get my hat-trick.

"I could have got four really, but I'm still happy to have got the two goals and to contribute to the victory."

England Under-21s leading goalscorers: Alan Shearer 13, Francis Jeffers 13, Saido Berahino 9, Frank Lampard 9, Darren Bent 9, James Milner 9, Mark Hateley 8, Carl Cort 8, Mark Robins 7, Shola Ameobi 7, Jermain Defoe 7.
