The Aussie defender hopes to start by launching an Albion cup run and then he is keen to kick-start his own Baggies career in the process.

Davidson could hardly contain his excitement at making his Albion debut as a second-half substitute in Saturday's goalless Premier League draw at Southampton.

Now, with first-choice left-back Sebastien Pocognoli an injury doubt for tonight's clash with Oxford in the second round of the Capital One Cup, Davidson insists he is ready for a maiden start.

And the summer signing is hoping his own breakthrough can coincide with a long-awaited cup run for the club.

"I am trying to catch up with fitness but on Saturday I felt solid and strong and didn't really feel tired," said Davidson, whose pre-season was disrupted by the contractual issues that delayed his arrival at The Hawthorns from Dutch side Heracles.

"I think my match fitness is getting better and the only way you get match fit is by playing games.

"So hopefully I can get another run against Oxford in the cup game and get as many games as I can to get back to how I felt at the World Cup.

"I think I am ready to play 90 minutes and I need to step up now.

"I've had two-and-a-half or three weeks of training and played two reserve games and the game on Saturday, so I think I'm ready for 90 minutes now.

"It's a long season and you need to have depth in the team, so if the gaffer is going to change a few players for this game there are some quality players to come in.

"You want to get 90 minutes under your belt and it's a great opportunity to have a run-out against Oxford.

"It will be a tough game, as every game is over here, but I think we'll be OK.

"Everything is big in the UK, especially the Premier League. I don't think it's just Australia where it's big, I think it's all over the world.

"It's the biggest league in the world and the cups are massive too because the biggest teams play in them.

"I think this is a great competition because anything can happen. You see Premier League teams losing to smaller teams so it's exciting football."

Alongside Davidson, record signing Brown Ideye is also hoping for a full Albion debut tonight after making a positive impact as a substitute at St Mary's.

The £10m man has also been catching up on fitness after a delay in obtaining his visa left him training away from his new team-mates for much of pre-season.

The expectation of fans, created by the unprecedented transfer fee and increased by the wait for his arrival, has thrown the spotlight on the Nigeria international, but Davidson insists he will take it in his stride.

"It doesn't get to him," said Davidson. "I don't think he thinks about it."

"You can see in training that's he's getting stronger day by day."
