West Brom complete Georgios Samaras deal

West Brom today completed a deal to bring Greece international Georgios Samaras back to the Premier League.

Check out a Celtic fan's tribute to his six years at Parkhead with his best goals for the Bhoys in this video above.

The 29-year-old joins as a free agent, after leaving Scottish champions Glasgow Celtic at the end of last season.

Samaras will wear the vacant No 30 shirt at the Hawthorns, but won't be available for tomorrow's trip to Southampton.

He chose the Baggies over Spanish club Malaga while Sevilla, Hamburg and Lokomotiv Moscow were also linked to a move.

The forward last played in the English top-flight for Manchester City, heading north of the border to join Celtic in 2008.

He started out in Holland with Heerenveen and is a regular for his country, starring for Greece at the World Cup this summer.

The 6ft 4in front-man will now battle it out with club-record signing Brown Ideye, Saido Berahino and Victor Anichebe for a place.

Boss Alan Irvine said: "We have signed a player with vast experience and I’m delighted to welcome Sami to the club.

“He has played a lot of football at the highest levels – Champions League, European Championships and World Cups.

"The feedback we have got on him, from people like Neil Lennon, states he thrives on the big occasion. He will certainly play in plenty of those in the Premier League.

“Georgios has played in big games for a Celtic team that have often had a lot of the ball and have had to work hard to break the opposition down.

“But he has also shown another side to his game in other matches when they haven’t seen as much of the ball.”

Irvine believes he's now well-stocked with attacking options, saying: "We have now got four strikers with different qualities who can be used in different ways.

“That’s great for us, because we need to have flexibility, the option to approach games in different ways and cover for injuries.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the four strikers we have.”

West Brom technical director Terry Burton played a key role in enticing the player to the club, saying: “Georgios is not your archetypal 6ft 4in striker.

“There is a physicality to his game but he’s also got pace, is good technically, handles the ball well and can stretch teams.

"He’s got good experience of the big occasion and that’s often when he produced his best moments came at Celtic.”

Irvine has been keen to get deals done well before the closing of the transfer window to avoid the stress of deadline day.

By the same token, the head coach is not expecting to lose any members of his squad before the end of the month and does not expect any bids to be accepted from Burnley for Craig Dawson.

The Clarets had three bids for the centre-back – the latest believed to be in the region of £2million – rejected by Albion.

He said: “There is nothing happening at the moment, nobody is coming for our players at the moment and hopefully that will remain the case."

As always, it's cringingly embarrassing to see the result of 'Jackett' spending hours scratching his backside, trying to work out how he can create a 'joke' from the words 'Georgios' and 'Samaras'-

eventually hitting on a stroke of comic genius by extracting 'George' and 'Samaritans' from it.

They planned to give him his own one-man TV comedy show, but the perfect title 'Jackass' was already in use......

Well I think we have a good idea of peoples opinions on this by now. Regardless of whether or not you are pleased with the transfer, let's all get behind him and make him feel a part of the club. Onwards to securing some wingers now.

I would imagine that AI will be delighted by this signing and he has good reason to be. We know from the comments on the previous thread that he isn't everybodys favorite player, but he has undoubted class and he gives us options in attack, which is what we needed. I think this is a good signing and I hope he proves the doubters wrong.

Welcome to The Baggies, Georgios and good luck.

Great signing for our club and Albion fended off several well known clubs to land him, Irvine pulls another rabbit out of the bag. Samaras plays well in big matches according to Neil Lennon, every match in the Premier League is a big one.

Alrite Bully, read it again, subtle difference, as with every signing, I am at least prepared to see him play for us before I decide whether he is any good or not.

I hope he is!

Wbaforever

I am aware this signing will not be met with universal approval.

For me it is a very useful addition, and represents a clear upgrade on last terms back up`s of Rosenburg and Vydra.

Waiting rather impatiently for our wide men upgrade too!!!

Captain Mardon International

He plays as a wide man too

Wbaforever

Hi Cap`t

Yes mate, but not a specialist there, more of a fill in.

AndyH

Hi Cap and WBA,

Durk Kyut plays as a wing back for Holland....yet at Liverhampton was a striker...I guess my point is that some square pegs can fit into round holes quite nicely given time. If he's deployed out wide he'll give his all.....which is still more than Sinclair ever seemed to do.

Regards

AndyH

Wbaforever

Andy

That is a great point, and well made.

Kuyt looked as if he has played there all of his life.

I am guessing and indeed hoping however, that Samaras has not been earmarked to play in that role, but would be capable if called upon.

Danish Baggie

Watch that video please.

Welcome mate. Think you will be fine.

AndyH

Welcome Gerogios.......

AndyH

Hope the money is being kept aside for two decent wingers, welcome Samaras, not my choice, but now your a baggie you will get my support 100%.

DarbyEndBaggie

This seems like a very good bit of business by Albion. As Irvine said, options up front now, and this guy could potentially play in wider positions as well.

Not a prolific scorer but given he performs better on the bigger stage then hopefully The Premier League will 'float his boat'.

Danish Baggie

He's a penalty taker also. We now have Saido, Dorrans, Gardner and Georgios, so pay back time for all the bad decisions form last season please.

Kev the Rev in LA

Danish

That's the most hopeful and positive thinking post I've ever read. a little misguided maybe, but positive.

You still on about last season after that decision against Sunderland ......are you being serious, you are.......you're being serious.......incredible.

DroitwichBaggie71

Welcome to the Hawthorns Georgios Samaras Boing Boing!!! Great Addition will bring more options up top

Max Wall Heath Baggie

Well the lessons of last season have been well and truly learnt NOT .

Wbaforever

Hiya Max

When you say that..........are you referring to Anelka ?

Max Wall Heath Baggie

Alright Forever

I was thinking Anichebe, Sinclair , Lugano , Anelka etc you know the sort of thing poor signings .

Hope the golf's going well .

Wbaforever

Cheers Max

The reason I asked. Anelka came with a lot of baggage, and it transpired that he still had a lot of baggage.

Samaras on the other hand, has shown to be nothing less than a model professional at his previous clubs.

And I do believe he is an upgrade, as a squad member, on the Berg and Vydra.

Lugano, Gone.........Lescott in, a massive upgrade.

Sinclair, gone...........whoever in, a massive upgrade.

In truth, who among us expected Sinclair to fail so spectacularly. When he signed I thought it to be a huge coup for the club, that alone should teach us not to jump to conclusions............one way or the other.

I would respectfully disagree about Anichebe. At the moment I would say average rather than poor. And last seasons shambolic circus, was probably not the best situation to make judgment.

The Real Bully Hoo.

Hi Forever.

Probably not your most dramatic post but in terms of good common sense it hits every button Brilliant.

Danish Baggie

Reg. your point about Sinclair . Lots on here, cant remember names, where unhappy that we were to tight to pay £ 5mill for him and only sing him on loan.

Captain Mardon International

I'm so glad I finished my lunch before seeing this.

However I'm going to take the half full approach to our new player. He deserves a chance, and perhaps it will work out well for us. From what I have seen of him which is not too much, he can change a game with a moment of quality, a bit like MAF could do every now and again. He's experienced so can add a dimension with his head I suppose.

We need to realise that our 2 finishers - Brown/Berahino will be fed by our 2 hold up strikers Samaras/Anichebe.

Max Wall Heath Baggie

Oh Captain , i thought you would get off the fence and say what you REALLY thought .

Captain Mardon International

Max, I don't normally hold back, but I'm tired of feeling negative all the time. I still stand by my opinion of Alan Irvine, but will remain calm and support him for the time being.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

Kev the Rev in LA

Adeu

UptonBaggie

Jack and Kev,

I don't understand why you feel that because Captain has reservations about a player or the manager that it makes him any less a supporter .There are a good few players over the years I have not rated, and I feel as paying fans we have the right to express our opinion .If Albion resigned Luke Moore would you be happy to give him your support and complain if anyone criticised????

The Real Bully Hoo.

Upton.

I thought that was a good post from Jack. The difference is that we've seen what Luke Moore can do but the manager and Samaras have been roundly condemned before they've even had a chance to show what they can do for us.

As Kev has rightly said before now, the villagers with pitch forks need a regular victim and Liam Ridgewell's gone so wheel on the next one.

THEGREENMAN

Well the deal is done and we have another striker with a different style to what we have already.

All we need now is for all the injuries to clear up, all the new players to get up to speed regarding fitness, and most of all a wide man capable of getting past defenders, and putting in those killer crosses for the strikers to feed off.

Not too much to ask for is it ??

THEGREENMAN

The View From Baggy Bottom

Hi, THEGREENMAN.

I think we are nearly there now for this window. I would like to see one more major signing, who preferably, can play on either wing. It would be nice to have the option of mixing up the angle of attack during a game.

We have a couple of players who can play wide already, so I would like to see one great signing rather than two o.k. signings.

I know that woudn't be easy to achieve and it wouldn't come cheap, but I think it would send out the right message to everone in the Prem that Albion have serious ambition.

Who that player might be, I honestly don't know. They don't grow on trees. It would just be nice to feel that WOW factor, which would lift everyone involved with the club as we get down to the nitty gritty at this early stage of the season.

It'll be what it will be, but I can dream, can't I?

TVFB♥B

UptonBaggie

the link to Biabiany made me really excited but that seams to have died .

Wbaforever

Same here Upton.

Reported Albion wouldn`t match the £6M valuation, then later reported we were willing to pay the same amount for Jarvis.

Could not get my head around that!!

SurreyBaggie

It could be that the £6m was considered too much when we needed another striker too, but now we have secured one on a free, it might free up said funds.

I'm sure we have some god targets to pursue.

In my opinion we HAVE already signed two players with the WOW factor.

One will probably be on the bench, and the other in the stands.

I do hope AI proves all the doubters wrong, but I want him to do it with panache.

I do not buy into this "not up to speed" argument.

Ideye and Gamboa have the tools to terrify defences, let them loose I say.

UptonBaggie

WBAforever

Agree .. same happened to Mulumbu when he arrived .. We played Johnno at defensive mid when Mulumbu wasn't deemed ready .

Wbaforever

HaHa Greening defensive midfield, I had forgot that mate.

I absolutely loved Jonno, he was an orchestrator, a tigerish tackler he was not.

Jack the Hat

Wbaforever,

We have a league cup match midweek, bung all our fit newbies on for extra game time, do them the world of good in getting them up to scratch and get playing time together. We would still come home with the bacon.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

RobinBrittain

We already have three wing backs who should be able to provide ammunition for the strikers if we cannot find an available specialist winger.

It's interesting to note that last weekend none of the four clubs who were at the top of the table at the end of last season played a specialis wideman. If Liverpool sign Balotelli , Sterling may move out wide but Chelsea , City and Arsenal generally play without specialist widemen.

BrierleyHillOriginalBaggie

Welcome Georgie boy, must admit I didn't look too deeply at it when the leaks started as you just don't know if it's fact or fiction

But he's here now and whoever wears the shirt gets my backing

Certainly gives us new dimensions, has lots of experience on the big stage

Plenty of competition up top, so whoever gets the nod will have to perform, unless they want to want get some splinters

Yes I'm warming to this and think it could really work out

Yorkshire baggies

To Be Fair he looks alright in the video, But I was looking for someone a bit more exciting. Hope he proves me wrong and does Really well for the Albion.

We do need something special out wide, Brunty as been a good servant but we need to step up again to move forward. Still a good squad player.

Come on Albion pull something out the hat.

bob.williamsfindlay

I heard one supporter comparing Samaras with Anichebe; which is unfair on both players. They are very different in all departments. I've watched Samaras regularly over his Celtic career and I believe he will frustrate and delight in equal measure. I believe all our strikers are weak in a variety of areas therefore it's vital Irvine finds the right combination upfront. I'm looking forward to seeing how the strikers work together.

AndyH

Hi Bob,

Samaras and Vic do have parts of their game in common - link up play..... can play cleverly to win set pieces......can score.......Samaras has the added advantage of playing wide...the perception from back home, and AndyL pointed it out as well, is that he will delight one moment and infuriate the next....and that in the big games he certainly plays well....and without knocking the SPL he will get bigger games in this league. It will be interesting to see who is paired with who....and I'd expect him (depending on fitness) to play some part midweek....

I'll be honest ...as I said yesterday he'll be a marmite signing and we'll love him or be frustrated...but personally speaking, and after watching the video again, I'm coming round to the idea of him doing well....and we've got to trust the people in charge ..

hope you're well

AndyH

bob.williamsfindlay

AndyH

I wasn't saying they didn't have parts of the game in common; my point was they execute them in very different styles. The other guy was suggesting Samaras would merely be an inferior 'double' for Victor - this is to ignore the added strengths Samaras can bring.

Being an Albion and Celtic supporter means I've had years to evaluate him.

AndyH

Evening mate,

I've got to admit i'll bow to your and AndyL's in depth knowledge of Sammy....even though I'm a Scot I don't follow an old firm team in detail. (Berwick Rangers for me!!)

As I said yesterday I'm not against the signing....it'll be interesting to see where he's slotted in....but it sure beats signing some of the players we've been linked with and he does bring a wealth of different experiences....we live in interesting times mate

hope you are well

jonathan.willetts.3

We're never going to sign anyone who can score 20+ goals a season. We need to be realistic. If out of the four we have up front a couple of them can score maybe 10-12 goals each a season, and with some help from midfield & defense, then that's as good as we can expect. Whoever comes in, and pulls on a Baggie shirt, needs to be supported. It may not be to everyone's liking, or how they think we should play, but that's the Albion. Remember .... WKWWA. BOING BOING

There have been two types of post regarding the manager, the ones condemning the appointment and the ones like myself saying we'll give him a chance. NOBODY has claimed he's a great manager or a guaranteed success.

Right Oh here goes,

On my travels I have actually seen him play 4 times for Celtic and those 4 times he was dreadful, slow, lazy, no input and a complete waste of space.

Now, looking at the above video clip I can see where people are coming from but lets keep it into perspective, thats 9 mins football over 7 years play and I am not a big fan of footy clips especially after the Rosenberg fiasco.

Saying that, we must ....MUST give the fella a chance and I would be absolute delighted to say "I was wrong" and I will say it if proved.

People also know about my thoughts with Anichibe and to me perhaps Samaras pips him at the post for starting WHEN fit.

I just wish Albion made these signings before the season starts but there you go.

If the bearded Greek Joe Mayo goe in with all guns blazing and he hits the above form, then with Pocco/Davidson, Gardner & Co we could become a formidable force and it will be nice to see how it all gells together.

Interesting times at the Albion !

baggiebornandbred

speaking to a lot of people today they see this as an absolute donkey of a signing, and on a lot of grounds i can see that too, but, nobody really knows how a player is going to react in the premier league, for me the signing of bairs was our worst and our best remains to be seen,

i was listenng to a interview SAF gave a few years ago when talking about team balance, he said quite blunty there are only three/four players in a team that can win a game the rest create the cog for other four, he also talked about team set up saying all top teams work with four strikers (which we now have) a good crop of cdm, cm and cam players two good side players, a solid back too, four good utility full backs and a solid keeper, reading into it thats pretty much what we have now bar the two wingers i dont think weve done bad in this window at all we just for me havent been aggresive enough with signing players although i undertand others disagree, hooefully by next sunday we will have two wingers ready to be brought in and then competition is good, i really dont think weve done too badly guys but obviously there are people out there wanting us too sign messi ronaldo and ribery tomorrow on 6 year deals,

all is looking pretty good, hopeful on the wingers

he's currently 29

his goal scoring record's poor?-

roughly around 1 in every 3 games at Celtic - inc. substitute appearances - and their first player to score in 5 consecutive Champion's League away games, including against Barcelona

he's slow?-

Tamworth baggie-grow up,it's called Scotland. Samaras has been booed off tbe park by Celtic supporters. He's no cult hero up here. Most of you are forgetting he was a flop at Man City ;-)

simmo54

Not impressed with this signing one bit ...... smacks of just a making up the numbers and signing him cos he is FREE. What it does mean is that it stops us signing another striker.

capehill

Simmo , what is it with you, go and support Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottingham, Burnley, Leicester, hull, Everton, west ham, Southampton, Man ure, Man City, Liverpool, What is your problem Simmo, we are Albion, ever sung it, and meant it, when the we are struggling , that is what u believe, surely. Now stop this self pitying , I've had enough, inside you some where there is a fight to be better than we are, its all egoistic crap, we are what we are. We are Albion , and that is it, I love the Albion. Short and Simple. End off. The pride is tremendous.

Woodman Corner Jake

Superb signing.....brings a different dimension to the squad and gives us greater depth and variety.

If he replicates the quality he shows in the Celtic tribute video then he'll quickly become a Baggies hero.

Woodman Corner Jake

In response to the doubters, doom-mongers and nay-sayers...........

He's 29. This not old!

He has a remarkable turn of pace, great balance and an excellent touch.

His goal- scoring record at Celtic was a stunning 73 in 165 appearances in all competitions.

He has experience of playing at the highest level for club and country.

What's not to like!

CantelloRocket 78

Jake,

if we were about to sign Lionel Messi, you can bet yer bottom dollar some on here would say he's too short, was rubbish in the World Cup, and having never played in The Premiership, is too much of a gamble......

louisville baggie

Beat me to the punch!. Good comments. W.C.J. If A.I. can keep Georgios motivated it's a good signing. Seen him drift in and out games a little at times. But there again Georgious they'll be no trips to Ross County or Inverness C.T.

Another player wanted by our rivals. As far as relegation goes pick 3 from 12 clubs but without doubt we have good depth in the squad now.

I know A.I. was not most peoples choice as head coach including mine but there again was T.M, R.M.D, S.C and a Spaniard named Pepe Mel ?.

I'll tell u what , I am a blinkered Albion fan, I hate the players we sign, I hate it that we have signed a 9 mill b brown?, I hate it even more that weve signed a beljum, poco who, an Aussie ,Davidson, who?, Baird , Gardner yowm having a laff, SamaRas, 29 yrs old , whaat.? Jonas is a donkey , along with VA, berahinio , petulent school boy, Foster a waster , apart from that I can't wait to see the baggies tomorrow , boing boing

The View From Baggy Bottom

Wim screwed, ay we.

The Real Bully Hoo.

Agreed Don't know why we're bothering, we might as well just hang out the white flags now and pack it all in now.

NEVER, we are Albion , we are Albion , boing boing

The Real Bully Hoo.

Anybody doubting the good work our scouting dept does should cast their eyes over the Boukari article on the Wolves side. Have a scan through some of the posts, it's like a nightmare. Then think how many problems we've had with injuries of players we've brought in over recent years. Bravo to our recruitment and medical staff.

SEATTLE WOLF

Wolf in peace...

I must say, well done, again, to the Baggies and all that has counted towards this latest addition. He's clutch, or has been throughout his career, up north for Celtic, and at the international level for Greece.

I am impressed with what WBA's has been up to these past few months, as they look solid and capable to hold their own for at least mid-table Premier League stability, if not higher.

Good luck at St. Mary's.

You should be on stage. Samaras is awful. :-D

The Real Bully Hoo.

Lovely post Seattle and thanks for that. Except I haven't a clue what clutch means in this context.

What a crap welcome towards our new signing Georgios Samaras. 25 posts of UTTER RUBBISH, until TVFBB finally said that he thinks that Georgios could be a good signing for us. These types of childish comments about a joke are the sort of tripe that I would have expected from the Wolves supporters, but in fact one of the best comments came from a Wolves supporter "Seattle Wolf " well done sir your comments are very appreciated.

I know that we have the banter between our clubs but I hope that the Wolves do well this season and that our teams will be competing against each other in the near future.

Welcome to the Albion Georgios I hope that you and your family settle in okay and that you can do well for the Baggies. You have come to a great club and will help to mould what is going to be a very good team this season once everyone has gelled.

C'mon you Baggies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CantelloRocket 78

Baggie 68,

well said, mate-

Samaras has 78 International caps, and much Champion's League experience - Brown Ideye's another Champion's League player - Joleon Lescott's just left the Premiership Champion's for us, a much capped England International - Gamboa a star in the recent World Cup, a Bundesliga star, an Australian World Cup player, etc. etc, etc.......

even a few short years ago, we could only DREAM of a Summer with this list of signings, but STILL people moan, and grumble, and criticise-

I have to refer back yet again to a poster named 'Lone Throstle' who said 'Black Country Folk are a miserable lot....'-

ENJOY and APPRECIATE it people, the likes of Bolton and Fulham spent years in the top flight, but are now struggling in the Championship, whilst we have another premiership campaign before us - soak it up!!!

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Real Bully Hoo.

Two brilliant posts along with Lucky Man below. Samaras isn't guaranteed to do well for the simple reason that football just don't work like that..

We're referred to as the rose tinted brigade but the alternative is joining the gang who use Travis' Why Does It Always Rain On Me as there theme song. Look on all the negatives of any signing and then if it doesn't work out shout long and loud 'I told you so didn't I?' Trouble is that when it goes right they go very quiet.

I don't think it's just the Black Country though Rocket, every club is blessed with a sprinkling of these Al Read's (how I miss Cyril as he's the only one that will recognise that reference.)

The Real Bully Hoo.

Their. Sorry TRNB.

Lucky Man

Well, thank god that Seattle Wolf hs written something positive..even though a Wolves fan!

This is a tremendous signing, not just for Albion, but for the whole of the WBA community! Look whay Samaras did in Glasgow....he could have a church named after him..there were tears and letters to the board when he left, not being offered a new contract.

He's turned down mega-million pound offers, top Euro clubs, but desire to stay in UK to finish his career bfore coming back to Greece.

Well done Georgios....best of luck...just enjoy yourself and play to your full potential!!!
