The Hawthorns head coach could use the £10million man as a substitute in the season opener against Sunderland tomorrow, despite a lack of pre-season action.

And, despite having to rely on others to assess the Nigeria international, Irvine is looking forward to using him.

He said: "Brown's been monitored by the recruitment side of the club for a considerable time and there are a lot of reports on him.

"When we were looking for strikers, his name was on a very short list.

"I said a few weeks ago that I'd never seen him play, but I'm not quite sure how I was supposed to see him play.

"When I came in it was the close season, so it wasn't possible to go and watch people.

"My way of finding out was to look at video clips and what I saw backed up what the recruitment people were saying.

"He's a player that likes to go in behind. He can create chances for himself and he can score goals that other people make for him, so he's got that instinct in terms of getting into good positions.

"Hopefully he will continue to show the kind of qualities that made the club follow him for a long time.

"It wasn't a new name that came in. He was somebody we have been tracking."
