The Baggies are keeping tabs on the Ireland international as they look for attacking reinforcements.

The 30-year-old is on a lengthy list of potential signings as Irvine looks to beef up his forward line for the new Premier League season.

And, while they are not expected to make a move imminently for the former Ipswich forward, he could emerge as a target later in the transfer window.

Walters is a close friend of Baggies defender Gareth McAuley having played alongside the Northern Ireland man at Portman Road. And his versatility – he has operated as a central striker and a wide player for the Potters – could appeal to Irvine.

Walters is under contract for another year at the Britannia Stadium so would command a transfer fee but there are signs that Potters boss Mark Hughes would be willing to listen to offers.

Albion are targeting wingers and a striker to complete their squad but have cooled their interest in French wideman Jonathan Biabiany, contrary to reports in Italy yesterday of a £6m bid for the Parma man.

Recent scouting reports have been mixed and, while the Baggies have not ruled out re-igniting their interest at a later date, the 26-year-old now appears an unlikely arrival at The Hawthorns.

Burnley are considering their next move in the battle for Craig Dawson after having a third bid of around £1.5m turned down.

Dawson has also had a transfer request knocked back but Burnley are still interested.

The centre-back scored a bizarre own-goal to condemn the Baggies to a 3-2 defeat at Port Vale on Tuesday, with Irvine later admitting his side's defending was poor.

"I worried about the defending," said Irvine. "That's not going to be acceptable.

The goal from a set piece is something we need to do better and we will get to work on that and the first goal they got was poor defending going through several individuals."
