Joint-assistant head coach Rob Kelly is positive that Albion players can adapt to Alan Irvine's coaching methods ahead of the new season.

In his first interview since being appointed to the club's coaching staff, Kelly is convinced Irvine will prove his mettle after his appointment.

It was a move which drew initial criticism from Baggies fans but with the first week's training underway, former Wolves coach and Leicester boss Kelly suggests the decision was another innovative move by the club.

"I know the history of West Bromwich Albion – it's a well organised, forward thinking club," he added.

"Alan is a terrific coach and players will know their roles.

"He likes to improve players and make them better. If that happens, the group improves.

"He's a football man. He shows great attention to detail and is good to work with.

"He's a football person and the work he does on the training ground has a purpose and relevance to it."

The pair know they have an audience to win over but have eagerly grasped the challenge from chairman Jeremy Peace to bring about long-awaited first team impacts from the club's younger players.

Although new signings will follow to join Craig Gardner, Joleon Lescott and Chris Baird, the Baggies are looking to supplement their numbers with further progress from the youth ranks.

Those include Adil Nabi, Liam O'Neil, Donervorn Daniels and Kemar Roofe with Academy starlets Aaron Birch, Bradley Garmston, Joe Ward and Samir Nabi pushing for recognition too.

Kelly feels Irvine's experience of working with youngsters, having come to the club from Everton's academy, can only help encourage them.

"West Bromwich Albion have always been a club that if they're good enough they'll get an opportunity," said the Albion joint No.2.

"There are good senior players, some players who have had success here and done well.

"We want to keep the core of senior players but everyone likes a young one coming through especially if they come through the system.

"If they're good enough and work hard enough and impress then they will be given a chance. Supporters, staff, other players – everyone knows it's good if you can bring one of your own through."
