Albion have rejected a £1m from Burnley for centre-back Craig Dawson – and been placed on alert over long-standing target Jordan Ayew.

The Baggies have dismissed the Clarets' Dawson bid out of hand and told the Premier League new-boys the former England Under-21s man is not for sale.

And they have been put on standby by news from France that Ayew is set to leave Marseille this summer.

Burnley's bid for Dawson came as the Baggies prepared for a firm offer from Derby for another of their youngsters – midfielder George Thorne.

But the Hawthorns hierarchy gave the proposal from Turf Moor short shrift and told the Championship runners-up that a second offer would not be welcomed.

However Burnley, whose director of football is former Baggies recruitment analyst Lee Darnborough, could still test the Baggies' resolve with an improved bid.

Derby have yet to formalise their interest in Thorne after his loan stint with the Rams at the end of last season, but the East Midlands club have registered their interest and made it clear a cash offer is likely to follow.

Albion, meanwhile, will keep tabs on Ayew after it emerged in France that he is likely to move on before the start of next season.

The 22-year-old striker, who the Baggies tried to sign last summer, has a year remaining on his contract.

Albion attempted to complete a deal to take Ayew on loan last summer and enquired again in January. But they could not agree terms with Marseille.
