West Brom fans to fly the flag for under-pressure Pepe Mel

Albion fans are preparing to show their support for under-pressure boss Pepe Mel by waving Spanish flags at Saturday’s Premier League clash with Swansea.

The 2,000 travelling supporters at the Liberty Stadium will display the flags as Mel fights to save his job just eight games into his Hawthorns reign.

The idea was proposed by Exeter-based fan Glyn Hopkins and gathered steam on an online Albion messageboard. And Hopkins, who plans to distribute 10 of the giant flags himself before kick-off in Wales, wants as many of the fans to join in as Mel looks for his first victory in charge of the Baggies.

He said: “I am sick to death of all the stick that Pepe Mel is taking. It seems like the knives are out for him but since this guy has come in he has never been given the tools to do the job.

“The players don’t seem to be fighting for him and it doesn’t appear he’s getting support from anyone within the club.

“So I suggested the idea of Spanish flags so the fans can show Pepe that we are all behind him.

“I put it on westbrom.com and on Facebook, and it seems to have caught on.

“I have bought 10 flags and will be handing them out and I know other people have bought them as well.

“It won’t need many for them to be seen and for Pepe to know he has the support of Albion fans.”

Mel’s reign has been beset by problems behind the scenes since his appointment in January, with players expressing concerns about his methods, key ally Dave McDonough leaving after disputes with colleagues and striker Nicolas Anelka suspended over his ‘quenelle’ goal celebration.

After four draws and three defeats, Mel’s position is already under scrutiny as the Baggies embark on four matches against teams in the bottom half of the table.

Hopkins said: “I don’t think fans will accept it if Pepe is sacked, but if this does turn out to be his last game then at least we will have said ‘thank you’.”

As much as it pains me to agree, we need to do just that and get behind him. Luckily Swansea are not the side they were, so perhaps a win is achieveable.

Glyn you hit the nail on the head!

If the players won,t play for him or fight for him whats the point.

oldergold,

Don't brag too much, wait until you play bigger football clubs if you get promoted.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

The Real Bully Hoo.

Well done Glyn, top bloke and to anybody else that is planning to make this gesture.

This seems to be a media driven campaign to get him the sack. It appears again that only the 'big' clubs should be allowed to employ foreign managers and what do 'little old West Brom' think they're doing.

I said before that I heard from a trusted source last week that there is no problem with PM withing the club either between him and the board or him and the players. It is all being fueled by journalists and media pundits.

On top of that the one thing on these boards that almost everyone agrees is that they don't want the manager sacked, even if we go down. And there aren't too many things on here we all agree on.

I notice the Mirror group have constructed their version of WONOH's mirror (no pun intended) league that puts us down already. Wouldn't they just love that.

Ole Ole Ole Ole. Boing Boing, Boing Boing.

We Only Need One Half!

Bully, you got a link to that, wouldn't mind a gander to see how it compares to mine.

The Real Bully Hoo.

WONOH.

It's on the detestable Birmingham Evening Mail's WBA page. Hope the E&S will allow that mention.

It's not exactly a mirror league but they've constructed some sort of panel of experts, probably George Gavin, Paul Franks and Tony Butler and cobbled together a set of rules.

I think the result is that we'll go down the Villa will win the Premier League and Birmingham City will burn in hellfire and damnation.

We Only Need One Half!

Found it, I hate to admit it mate, but its actually more positive than mine, which is why I said the other day this year I hope I am wide of the mark.

JIWAL

These flags.....white cross, with a white back ground?

HSK

You shouldn't have told them the colours of the Spanish Flag

The Real Bully Hoo.

Please. Nobody have a go at them. They really do think think it's those colours. The only thing they don't understand is why their club have been waving them for so long. Especially when they play us.

Jack the Hat

JIWAL,

Back to bed for you, what has Cornwall got to do with it.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

We Only Need One Half!

Well if it was Jiwal, I doubt anyone of ours would have scrawled "you've let us down again" over it.

CantelloRocket 78

Jiwal-

last time I saw one of them white flags, it was bein' waved by the Wolves players on the Molineux pitch, just after Albion scored that fifth goal-

so the Baggies players said 'ok, we'll save the other five 'til next time', which must've put the fear of the Lord himself up 'em, 'cos they ran away so fast, they disappeared down two divisions........

The Voice of Reason

Pepe Mel doesn't deserve to be a fall guy. If the Albion do go down, do what we did. Use it as an opportunity to clear out Garlick and all of the players who don't want to be there. If Brentford fail to get promoted go and get Warburton as DoF. Give Mel a chance to build his own team playing his own style of football.

HSK

Why not wave a white flag all the way to the Championship

The Real Bully Hoo.

Why should we copy our neighbours, they seem to have the copyright on that one.

Seriously though, hove you no sense of shame.

IF we go down we'll be favourites to come back up.

IF you come up you'll be favourites to go back down

Jack the Hat

You mean like your fans did for the classic Double-Drop?.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

Jack the Hat

Sorry, that was meant for HSK.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

Cyril

Jiwal and HSK. You two have white flags on the brain. Wolves flags are YELLOW !

Oops, that's the colour for COWARDS ain't it ?

(To the nice, sensible Wulfies, that shot was just for these idiots).

The Real Bully Hoo.

JIWAL.

My hero.

You turn what was a humorous post from one of our older bloggers into an excuse to threaten him over the internet.

What a sad little man you are and if you want to argue with being called sad then re-read your own post.

I'm only in my early 60's but I must admit that I'm not exactly quaking in my boots at the thought of meeting you in person.

I can understand why you're so reviled by the other fans on your own site.

JIWAL

and where exactly is the threat ? grow up

baggiebornandbred

This is were it turns sour,

football used to be about football and lads could take the banter alright were rivals and you arent going to agree with what we say but to threaten someone just aint right whichever way you look at it,

im all for banter its healthy but to take it out of context isnt

Jack the Hat

Cyril,

Here's me thinking the Dingle flag was black with a yellow streak down the middle.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

baggiebornandbred

Where have the other threads gone?

Jack the Hat

JIWAL,

(.... you wouldnt dare call me a coward to my face ! )

There is the threat you are too blind to see.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

ManInsider

Cyril proberly wouldn`t but make no mistake i would, im not suprised your picking on Cyril though as it seems to be a wolves thing bashing oap. Cyril is right in what he called you, YELLOW COWARD IDIOT.

We Only Need One Half!

and you tell me Jiwal, who set a record for their lowest attendance since the 19th century this season? (just in case you hadn't realised, we are in the 21st one now) who set a new record for the double drop, which one of us is in its fourth continuous season in the Prem, which one of us is in its eighth Prem season over all, which one of us is playing catch up on continuous wins, which one of us got hammered last time we met, who keeps getting knocked out the Cups by non League opposition, do you really want to do this Jiwal?

Embarrassing.

RobinBrittain

Its good to know that genuine Albion fans do not blame Pepe Mel fot the situation we are in. If it does transpire that he is not the man for the job then no blame whatsoever should be attached to him.

It's the people who appointed who must shoulder that responsibility , the same people who chronically under invested in the team back in August when it was clear to everyone that the team needed reinforcements in key defensive positions.

Considering what the club have achieved in the previous two seasons the situation we now find ourselves in reflects badly on the direction the club have received from the very top levels of management.

Jack the Hat

Robin B,

I don't go for the blame game mate, everybody at a given time does their best for our club, no-one is to blame if some things just don't work out. We all have to knuckle down and put things right.

Onward and upward with the BAGGIES.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

Cyril

Robin, I am somewhat surprised at your last two posts. There is absolutely no point in attaching blame to anyone for the position we are in. The time for recriminations, if there are any, is when the battle is over, won or lost. Then, the cowards are shot, (sold on)

the heroes get medals, (even more money) and if we are lucky, our General becomes a Brigadier, (we let JP live).

Fair play, Glyn.

Happy_baggie

I think its a great idea to show support for Mel - and more important that we show support to the players too.....

I disagree with Glyn's statement "“The players don’t seem to be fighting for him and it doesn’t appear he’s getting support from anyone within the club".

What does he base that on ?? How are the club not backing him ?? We hear that he has the support of the players so why be so negative ??

I support his idea but who made him a spokesman for "albion fans" ??

Going to take more than a few flags -

Jack the Hat

Robert,

The point about the flags has gone right over your head.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

One of my proudest moments of been a baggies fan was the semi final vs portsmouth at wembley 33000 baggies the majority with flags and scarves all singing the lords my shephard together i remember turning to my friends and saying that was intense it was a great moment and for 60 minutes we were louder and brighter, we need to go to swansea and never keep quiet sing our hearts out the entire games put pressure on their players and encourage until the very end we go one down we carry on encouraging because the 12th man exists

players need to feed off the energy that we create and it can push us on a really good idea glyn, maybe something we can incorporate at home games too

baggiebornandbred

Name has disappeared bb&b

Cyril

Spoken like a gentleman good sir.

PS: when I use words beginning with 'b', 'b', and 'b' the E&S would never print them.

baggiebornandbred

Strange but was a magic moment

Jack the Hat

Glyn ( Hopkins ),

Good of you, you didn't get any Dingles thinking like you when they were doing the Double-Drop, all they did was grunt and groan about their managers, players and staff.

Once again good tribute mate.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

We Only Need One Half!

What happened to the Jiwal comments??? whats the point of me going to all the trouble of putting him straight only for them to disappear?

baggiebornandbred

Ive just left a thread about unless someone has reported abuse

We Only Need One Half!

Ironically I have just received a email from the Deputy Editor informing me after my last little legal run in with the E&D this new system is entirely down to me.

Sorry guys, my actions were intended to stop big mouthed, ignorant, racist bigots like Wulfrunian, not to stop honest debate.

Old Wulfrunian

WONOH

Just to clarify and not knowing the source of your allegation, your reference has nothing to do with me.

OW

We Only Need One Half!

No Sir, it does not, and I apologies for the confusion that has been caused by some one using the actual name I said, which is extremely close to your own, unfortunately for you.

Wulfrunian

You can't spell properly. Anyway there must be a few Dingles where the P+++++ are on the Costa Del Crime !

We Only Need One Half!

March 11, 2014 12:50 pm

Can you not use the term P++++, it is racist and offensive, and frankly unacceptable.

Come on E&D you've panned Anelka for months, but you think this acceptable?

Wulfrunian

March 11, 2014 2:45 pm

Oops sorry E&S - didn't mean to upset your P++++ readers !

Old Wulfrunian

WONOH

Thanks for the explanation - I hadn't read those posts. I always try and be fair and even handed with my comments and would never resort to jibes from the gutter, regardless of their source, nor would I ever make them.

OW

Old Wulfrunian

Sorry - should have said 'respond' to jibes from the gutter....

Make your own Baggie fans Get ten sheets of a bog roll Put brown smears on it and nail it to a stick,

We Only Need One Half!

Think will pass on that Stearman, after all, never worked for your lot the two seasons prior to this did it?

Stearmans overhead kick

In other words, Stumped eh ! Anyway thought you might have changed your name after the away game at Chelsea,To something like only need one second half plus four minutes added on plus a certain penalty given against us.

We Only Need One Half!

Stearman, are you mad? serious question? why am I stumped, you make a suggestion, I point out it never worked for you, ergo its you who is stumped, my jealous little friend.

I think you will find it was 'Chelsea' (do try and keep up) that required "plus four minutes added on plus a certain penalty given against us" not the other way round. You analogy would be the same has you calling yourself 'Williams stunning free kick' after Morecambe actually beat you this season, wouldn't it?

They say what goes around comes around, finding comments like you have made funny such has you have, I would suggest you deserve it to happen to you, preferably at Wembley, in a play off final, see if you are still laughing then.

The Real Bully Hoo.

I thought they called those curtains in Wolverhampton.

'put brown smears on sheets of bog roll and nail it to a stick'?-

That gets yer an 'A' level Art exam pass in wulferhampton, dow it?

After the stuff you regularly spout, you'd just have to lick the sheets to get that effect.....
