Albion midfielder George Thorne today revealed he needed to quit The Hawthorns for the time being to keep his career on track.

moreThe Baggies youngster has joined Championship side Derby on loan for the rest of the season after struggling to force his way into Pepe Mel's team after a recovering from a cruciate ligament injury.

The 21-year-old said: "I found myself in a situation where I wasn't playing at West Bromwich Albion and I need to play games.

"To have a team like Derby after you is very positive for me. There were a few options but I had my mind and heart set on Derby.

"It was a 'no brainer' for me – I wanted to come here and play football."

Meanwhile, young Albion winger Kemar Roofe, who has yet to figure for the first team, has returned from his loan spell at Cheltenham to try to impress Mel.

The 21-year-old made nine appearances for the League Two club during a two-month loan spell but his current Albion deal expires this summer and Robins boss Mark Yates said: "Kemar wants to be in his manager's eyes as he is near the end of his contract. He wanted to go back."
