Steve Clarke today insisted Albion are not vulnerable to January bids for Shane Long despite the striker revealing contract talks have stalled.
Long revealed yesterday that the Baggies’ last contract offer came six months ago and admitted he would have to consider his options in January if other clubs came calling.
But Clarke maintains Albion are not worried about the future of the 26-year-old, who has nine months remaining on his current deal plus a year’s option in the club’s favour.
“He’s got 21 months left on his contract,” said Clarke.
“He will tell you he’s got eight months left on his contract but he’s got 21 because the club has an option and there is no way they’re going to free him.
“He’s not vulnerable. He’s in a position a lot of players get in now.
“It would be better if we could tie him down to a contract and hopefully between now and January something will happen.
“But if it doesn’t he will still have over 18 months left here and we will just keep working towards it.
