Albion boss Steve Clarke today called on referees to give summer signing Stephane Sessegnon extra protection.
The Benin international, who signed for a record fee believed to be £5.5m, starred in Saturday’s goalless draw at Stoke despite missing two good chances.
But Clarke was unhappy at some rough treatment handed out by the Potters defenders.
“Stephane has great talent and he’s an entertainer,” said Clarke.
“He creates something out of nothing. He’s a little bit disappointed he didn’t get enough protection on the pitch. I thought he was fouled a lot.
“If you want to have an attractive product and you want to encourage creative players, then surely you have to give them a little bit more protection.
“He felt there were a number of challenges on him. He’s not asking for every one of them to be a free-kick, but he didn’t get his fair share on Saturday.
“And he’s disappointed that he had two really good chances but didn’t manage to finish them off.
“But next week is another game.”
