Jonas Olsson today claimed Albion’s deadline-day signings will shake up the dressing room as he hailed new-boy Scott Sinclair as one of the Premier League’s best wingers.
The Baggies centre-back believes the return of Nicolas Anelka following his threat to retire will also boost the team, who are bottom of the table with just one point from their opening three games.
Steve Clarke’s side have yet to score a league goal but boosted their attacking options on transfer deadline day with the signings of Stephane Sessegnon, Victor Anichebe and Morgan Amalfitano a week after recruiting Sinclair from Manchester City.
Olsson said: “It was important to the dynamic of the dressing room to bring people in. You need it for competition. You get a different take on things with different voices and qualities in a dressing room.
“It’s not just about replacing players who have left.
“Healthy competition makes you perform better. It’s vital in football. It makes you stronger and raises your game.
“Scott Sinclair coming in was a major boost. I knew the club was looking for a winger with pace and, for me, he’s one of the best wingers in the league. He’s a great signing for us.”
Anelka missed the goalless draw at Everton after being given compassionate leave following the death of a close friend and agent.
The club’s highest-profile summer recruit hinted he could quit completely but was back for the home defeat to Swansea last week.
And Olsson said: “Nico had a great pre-season. We know what he can do. He’s a top professional, a top player and very fit for his age.”
